Default Will this make a diff?

I just upgraded my stock 2010 Ultra to the following:

Polk Audio DB522 DB+ Series 5.25" (in front - rear tourpak is detached)
Sony DSX-M80 Marine Digital Media Receiver

There is no comparison of the clarity between the new setup and stock. In an earlier post some suggested I put 6.5" speakers in the front. If I decide to make that change, what change can I expect? Would the system be a little louder? Also, if this is a worthwhile upgrade, what speaker suggestions do you have (and please nothing that would break the bank)?

Thanks!

The first question most of us would ask is are you running an amplifier of some kind? If not that would be the first thing to look into. I also have a 2010 UC and have speakers in the lowers as well as the fairing. I am feeding them with an Arc Moto 600.4 and they get louder than I can stand at highway speeds. The reason I chose that particular amp is it is kind to FM reception. If FM isn't a big deal to you many of the cheaper amps will do fine.

I have been told that the Stinger SPX 700 is also kind to FM but I've heard it can be hard to find in this Covid era market. Yes 6.5" speakers (with the Metra adapter) would probably give you a little more sound but to really get some oomph you are going to need a dedicated amplifier.

Like Hoyt has mentioned, you are probably going to want an amp in the equation.
Basically swapping your HU and your speakers from the Factory stuff is probably a lateral swap. There might be some improvement but it will be minimal.
The Stinger SPX is FM friendly, but I haven't seen much for deals on that amp lately.
Upgrading to a more efficient 6.5" coax, might net you a little better sound, but probably won't gain you much volume. The increase in volume is going to need an amp in the mix. The HU does have a built in amp, but they are usually lacking the kind of power needed to hear the benefits on a motorcycle.
I would shoot for an amp similar in power to the Stinger with around 125 watts per channel x 4. You can always dial the gains back with your current DBs, but if you decide to move up to 6.5" speakers in the future, you will already have a decent amp. If you are not worried about losing radio reception, it opens up the options a little on an amp.
i know you are hoping to keep the budget low, and not break the bank. I started the exact same way you are, with a speaker upgrade, followed by a Sony HU, then a set of 6.5" speakers, and then an amp, then a better set of speakers, followed by a better amp, etc......in the long run that routine cost me way more money and headaches than it was worth. Set your sights on a decent 4 channel amp you can build off of. If you decide you still need more, shoot for a set of 6.5" Mmats for your fairing as they are worth every penny, followed by better speakers for your tour pack speakers.

Thanks for the responses. I was under the impression that the Sony unit I have has a built in amplifier (Sony DSX-M80 Marine Digital Media Receiver - 4 x 100 W Max. (45 W RMS) power output). So that being said, as my original question goes, would upgrading to 6.5 speakers add volume? Thanks.

That amp will not be sufficient for some decent 6.5. It would barely power two horns.

You already have Polk aftermarket speakers. Switching to 6.5" speakers won't be much different. Even though your Sony has a built in amp, it can only put out so much power/volume. In otherwards 40 watts is 40 watts, regardless of speaker size. The 6.5" will probably sound better, as in fuller, but you are going to need more than the HUs 40 watts to increase the volume. You could pick a 6.5" speaker with a higher efficiency rating, to help, but that is only going to do so much at 40 watts. Most of us use amps capable of at least 100 -125 watts RMS to get decent volume for our fairing speakers.
