does just changing out from the stock speakers make a difference
Just like the title says. Does just changing out the stock speakers for something better really make that big of a difference without an amp? I would like my radio to sound better, not louder. I am fine with the volume of my radio just am not that happy with the quality of the sound or general lack of depth if that gives a decent enough explanation.
IMO Yes, I changed out mine on my 2013 FTLRX more because the speaker grills are dog ugly. I wear helmets so I stream music and nav using BT and rarely listen to the stock system. But when I do it is much better.
check some of the threads- there are other speakers ( and larger with adapter rings) available in 2ohm which will give a better sound with the stock stereo.
some riders have added polyfill as well.
I have J&M7.25's and I cannot recommend them- uneven frequency response...screachy trebles

I don't think so, I was forced to change out my speakers when they died and better quality speakers didn't sound much better. Not enouugh to justify the cost of switching anyway.
Part of the problem is trying to get good sound in a very hostile environment. I think an amp is require to push better sound through that environement.
I went from stock to hogtunes and there was a noticeable difference. Then went from hogtunes to boom and another noticeable increase. Then went to polk audio mm651's and much better. Then I added a rockford fosgate pbx3002x amp and am very pleased.
Polk Audios where about 125 I think from amazon, and the same price for the map. Did the install myself. You will also need adapter rings which are 25 bucks.
I replaced the factory speakers in my '98 ultra with boom speakers from the moco, with no other mods. They sound way better IMO. But the speakers were I replaced were 15 years old.

The J&Ms were a big improvement (over stock) in both the '05 SEEG and the '09 SERG.
I changed out my stock speakers on my 2013 FLHTC with Hawg wired and no amp.
It was a big improvement, music was more detailed instrument wise and vocals were clearer at high volume.
