Actually, it's pretty easy to see a clipped signal (the one in your pic isn't). A clipped signal will be a sine wave with obvious plateaus showing the "clipped" peaks. When setting the gain I'd get a very clearly clipped signal and then back it off until it's got defined peaks. The pic below is oversimplified but it's pretty obvious when you're clipping or not. Even with a very inexpensive o-scope.

Yes agreed, I meant with these cheaper o scopes, at least for me, the graphics display isnt very good. I never saw a wave that I thought was satisfactory enough one way or another to say it was showing clipping or not. Perhaps I just didnt have it set up right though. I just didnt trust it, so I just wound up setting my gains with a multimeter.

Jump to 6:30, IF mine looks like this then I can handle it, and check it with the DD-1 for accuracy

Yeah, that's pretty much it. I don't think this guy knows how to use a scope very well though but you get the idea. He wasn't seeing clipping on the older version except around 9:30 (a clipped signal is VERY obvious).

If you have a DD-1 then by all means use it if it will make you more confident. I don't have one and have never used one but I'd be surprised if it was more accurate than either of these scopes (would a DD-1 show the fuzziness that was indicating slight distortion?)

When I had better hearing I always used my ears and checked for accuracy with a scope (when I had access to one).

His second o scope wave looks just like what I was dealing with on my scope. I dont have the lumy, but one of the knock offs that looks very similar to his second one. The first one....original lumy I think? looks much better. Never a smooth line at any volts.

Understood but you're not necessarily looking for a smooth line when setting gains (although the much-improved display on the latest gen was nice). You really only need to be able to identify clipping vs. a normal sine wave. Pixelated or not they are easy to differentiate.
