Do you know if it is true that they are not offering free updates for the head unit?
I am not sure what you mean by free updates if you are talking about firmware updates, that should be easy enough to download from the manufacture. If you are talking about some flash to the bikes ECU/BCM, then Im not worried about it. My bike is originally a RK, so I dont need to worry about these flash issues. Im just wiring the unit directly into the bike.
What did you end up installing?
Im in same boat with a 2016 SGS and reading as much as I can. 6.5 oem head unit terrible and will be removed by spring.

Hers my experience with Volunteer Audio!
I want to upgrade the whole speaker system but budget only allows for a piece at a time. Upon suggestion from them starting with Infinity Kappa Perfect 900x 6x9s for the kids to replace the H-D Boom 2 5x7s because they are bi-ampable, separate connections for woofer and tweeter. I have had many emails back and forth and they usually answer within one day. Eventually I will change the fairing speakers with the Infinity Kappa Perfect 600x 6.5s then change the amp and maybe the head unit. They said they will help me each time I add/change part of the system.

not to hijack but, I just received my kit from VA and installing within a couple of days. I also purchased not from VA GZ Yellow baskets to see which front speakers Ill go with.
I will buy the soundstream head unit, new speakers for the bat wing and if I can get by with the sound stream head unit power I will opt not to put in an amp.
I just don't like the factory head unit: sound is not good, takes too long to boot each time, navigation is 1980's atari quality.
I'm not looking to blast tunes, if sound stream with new speakers is even a little bit louder than oem I will be good. Worst case I can add amp later if not satisfied.
Definitely will get a call into VA when ready to get final guidance and make purchase and I will start a new thread with pic's of install when I do it.
VOLUNTEER AUDIO DO NOT DO WHAT THEY SAY THEY WILL. From the start this has been a horrible experience dealing with them. I spoke to Samantha on the phone, talked about my bike and build. I bought the radio ( SoundStream) and amplifier (Hertz 2000 watt) from them because they stated that they dyno tune the amplifier to the radio before shipping the amplifier. I bought a $300 harness because they stated that is what I needed. They shipped the radio with no issue, they did not set the amplifier with it being tuned and they sent me the complete wrong harness. They had to remake the harness and ship it out to me, they sent it 5 day mail when I paid extra for 2 day shipping. I was not able to use the harness after all due to my setup, I shipped it back on my dime. Asked to work with Jay to make me a harness to install in my saddlebag. Samantha gave me the run around for over a week saying she had to talk to Jay. They stop picking the phone up and she would only send text messages to me. Kept saying they would get back to me in an hour and week later nothing. They have not refunded me my money . After a week of this Jay just called me with nothing but attitude and complete disrespect in his voice! I DO NOT RECOMMED THEM , I WILL NEVER SPEND ANOTHER DOLLAR WITH THEM! THEY ARE LIERS AND UNTIL THEY RETURN MY MONEY THEY ARE THIEVES! WORSE EXPERIENCE I HAVE HAD DEALING IN THE MOTORCYCLE WORLD!!!!!
