Default Volunteer Audio Kit

I have been looking into upgrading my stereo on my 2014 Street Glide Special. I have been reading about different systems as well talking to a few members hear asking questions and getting recommendations. I'm a newbe when it comes to all this. I am looking for a 2 speaker fairing setup. I'm not 100% sure if want to replace the head unit, but I am open to it. I recently found Volunteer Audio. They off the below kit. I do like the plug and play aspect of this kit. I don't want to cut into my factory harness. A few questions about this kit. Are Hertz components good? Particularly the ones in this kit? Is the soundstream radio that much of an improvement over the stock 6.5 GT radio? Has anyone installed this amp and speakers? Last but not least, will this give a better sound than say the Rockford kits? Would it be comparable to a Soundz kit?

Sorry for all all the questions. But I figured there are a lot of smart people on here that could help a newb out. Hope the link works

They seem to be a good company. I personally had difficulty actually speaking with them. They never returned my voice messages, and email replies never answered all my questions so I went a different way.

That said the radio head unit would be a good upgrade over the stock GT for sure.

I ended up speaking with American Hardbag and it was a really nice experience. I went with Diamond and glad now I did. You may want to call Tim and tell him what you’re looking for and the budget. I personally think with just two speakers in the fairing that their Diamond unit with the Velocity horns is sweet. Everything was plug and play and they walked me through the setup and tuning process.

Good luck you will be very happy with almost anything over stock.

These plug and play deals are always gonna be priced accordingly. Not sure on hertz these days, but you can save some coin and do a 2 speaker setup WAY cheaper if you WANT to. It will be better than what you’re looking at.

My bike is an older bike so not sure about head unit details and pricing, but you can do it cheaper and better if you aren’t afraid to do a few butt connections. LOTS of threads in this tech section on popular amps and speakers to do exactly what you want.

thanks for the info. I have tried several times at checking out the tech section. It gets very overwhelming very fast for me. I'd rather not have to modify a speaker pod either. And setting up gains on an amp is super intimidating for real. It'd be nice to have an audio shop around that I could go to, but the only one close is in Maryland (almost 2 hours away) and when talking to them over the phone was quoting around $2700 for arc audio amp (no model number) with infinity kappa perfect speakers. The kit I linked from what I can tell was as equal or better than those components.

A simple set up in my opinion is a stinger 700/4, Mmats or GZ coaxial speakerz, and a line leveler with a stock head unit.

Modifying pods is not that intrusive, and won’t affect the bikes integrity. Amp gains aren’t bad either, but trust me.. I’ve been on your side of the fence and regretted my plug n play purchase. The best thing you have done is coming here first.

I would stay away from that hertz amp. Not sure how they advertise it as 600w. Its a 2, 3 or 4 channel amp and “total output” is 600w, they say. If you lookup the specs, its not. Its a nice HU and decent speakers but you can get better sound for less and wont have to cut your harness. They make harnesses to plug right into them for aftermarket head units.

When it comes to using your factory HU and flashing it, I cant help you with that. Plenty of others will chime in Im sure

Thanks for the help. I know modifying the pods doesn't affect the integrity. It's just not something I am looking to do or wanting to do. I guess I forgot to add a budget, I'd like to keep it between $1000-$1500 if possible. If I do the head unit I know it will be more. But I am still not sold on it as of this morning. Although I am leaning toward it.
So I was reading on another post that I'd want like 150-200 RMS for the speakers. Do they even make a speaker that is 6.5 that will do that? I mean without modding the pod? I also hear a lot about the Mmatts and GZ speakers.

Are you willing to get your current head unit flashed? If so then you can save a bunch of money and still have a good sounding fairing setup. I would suggest getting your head unit flashed to a 8/2 flash and get these items.

Amazon.com: Hertz SPL Show SX 165 NEO 6.5" Two Way Coax Car Speakers : Electronics Amazon.com: Hertz SPL Show SX 165 NEO 6.5" Two Way Coax Car Speakers : Electronics

Amazon.com: NVX VADM4 400W RMS Full Range Class D 4-Channel Car/Marine/Powersports Compact Micro Amplifier - Marine Certified : Electronics Amazon.com: NVX VADM4 400W RMS Full Range Class D 4-Channel Car/Marine/Powersports Compact Micro Amplifier - Marine Certified : Electronics

Amazon.com: Saddle Tramp - 8GA Power Sport Amp Kit, Amplifier Kits (ST-AK8) : Sports & Outdoors Amazon.com: Saddle Tramp - 8GA Power Sport Amp Kit, Amplifier Kits (ST-AK8) : Sports & Outdoors

Axxess AX-MLOC-HD1 2-Ch 80W Line Output Converter (parts-express.com)

Get the head unit flashed app. $50 depending on where you go,
Speakers $450
Amp $180
Wire harness $40
Loc $ 30
Total less than $800

Keep in mind that even if you buy the plug and play from volunteer or anyone, you will have to pull the fairing off, pull the pods out (pain in the ***), pull the seat and tank to run the wires to the battery so any P&P system isnt in my opinion P&P with all you have to do to plug it in and the volunteer kit requires pulling the stock radio out to install theirs. If you are happy with the stock 6.5 boom hu then you can save a ton of $$ by getting yours flashed.

Eh - Everyone has a bad day (not an excuse, but definitely could be a reason). I just called Volunteer Audio earlier this week. I am finishing a 2015 RK to RG conversion, and I am using the HDHU14+ for my head unit. However, I wanted to speak to them about some additional connectors / adapters to simplify wiring in my head unit to a factory RK harness. The staff member I talked to was AWESOME. He took the time to look up my bike's wiring harness and gave me a few ideas on which way to go with the setup. I ended up ordering everything from Volunteer, and I can't wait for it to arrive. When it shows up, I will post a few pics and maybe a video. However, my initial experience with Volunteer has been absolutely amazing.

thanks for the list of components. I do have a question, the speakers are rated at 75 RMS. Is that loud enough? As mentioned I had read unneeded 150-200 RMS. I'm not sure if that is per speaker or added together lol see the newb coming out. I am not afraid to do the work to install. Just not big on cutting into the stock harness. I've done pretty much all the work on my ride so far.
