Factory headunit died on 09 ultra so I pulled the trigger on a Metra inner dash conversion to 2 DIN. I want a bigger nav screen and controls that are easier to see. I want suggestions for 2 DIN receiver options with Apple Carplay and Android auto. Currently using a Samsung phone. CDs are nice but not necessary. What I want is a bright crisp screen that can be dialed back at night. Intuitive controls that don't require me to study them. The Soundstream HDHU14 looks nice but probably won't work with my bike. Other Soundstream models are dirt cheap which makes me worry about quality. I put a $700 Sony in my daughters car and in a year's time she killed it.
It may be the one you bought or the one you wish you had bought. Tell me the good and the bad.
My first bike was a 2013 FatBoy. I added an aftermarket fairing and a double DIN Kenwood deck. These days I'm rolling a 2015 Ultra with a Sony AX-7000. I think ultimately it comes down to what's important to you in a deck? Sirius XM built in? GPS built in? You've mentioned Carplay and Android Auto, how are you going to interface with them? Generally it will likely need to be through the phone as I haven't seen a deck yet that has the headset profile built in that's needed to interface directly with a bluetooth headset. Weather resistance? This limits your choices. Hand controls? Again - after market decks can provide some functionality but not likely the same level as a stock deck. I thought I'd read that Soundstream is coming out with a deck that will work for earlier bikes but not super sure about the time frame.
As I said I have the AX-7000. When I bought it it was because the hype was that it had "weather sealed buttons" and was a good deck for a motorcycle. After a 6 hour ride in the rain in Oregon/California that myth was put to rest. Fortunately the deck was not destroyed and was able to be dried out, but if I had it to do over again I'd probably go with something like the Kenwood I had. Built in Sirius (which the AX-7000 does have to be fair), built in GPS (which it does not have), built in wi-fi, etc. and deal with weather proofing after the fact. In the end it's about what features you're looking for - buy the deck that has those features. Weather proofing can always be done - there are shrouds that protect under the fairing, and covers to protect the face. My next deck will probably be a Soundstream based on weather resistance assuming other features I'm looking for are there. If I bought one today I'd be in divorce court tomorrow so it's gonna have to wait .
Thank you. This is exactly what I am looking for.
Voice control is not important but getting waze or maps on a screen I can see is important.
I don't take calls when I ride but I like to know I missed them.
