I was thinking of getting a $60 Pyle radio my coworker had high regards for, but every post and review I see about it says its garbage.
I was thinking of getting the $400 Aquatic AV radio.
Then I discovered Iron Cross Audio. For about $240 they can mod my factory radio for bluetooth and set preamp outputs.
Is there a noticeable quality difference between Aquatic AV and factory radio if I were to use the same amp and speakers? Think I would prefer factory OEM modded if it were similar.
The old factory HD radios were not that good. There are several aftermarket replacements that are pretty much plug and play the are affordable and work so much better.
Iron cross does great work recovering and fixing the old radio. But in the end it is still what it always was a weak link that will fail at any time.
I got Iron Cross to add front and rear preamp outputs to my stock head unit and then I added a Metra bluetooth module which works much better than the basic streaming bluetooth that IC installs. I really like it because I got to keep my AVC, intercom, and CB. I think total cost was about $200.
If you don't care about the Ultra specific options I would consider paying a little extra and getting the Rockford head unit. It is a little more money but the specs are a little better as well. Just newer technology than the Aquatic units.
Is Rockford better than Aquatic AV? Not sure if it's $200 better. Assuming Aquatic AV with a soundstream amp would be better than just a rockford head unit at a similar price.
Only thing kind of intimidating is the amp wiring. Not sure what kit would work with soundstream and what I need to do. I've done handlebar wiring, but handlebar wiring seems a lot simpler than the amp wiring.
I havent gotten to use it yet as Im still rebuilding & upgrading the bike, but I was lucky enough to score a still-in-the-box RF head unit for $300.
The fit is great.
I was able to set it up to pair w/ my iPhone and it worked fine in the garage.
It will work w/ or w/o an amp (or two).
My point is to keep your eye out and you might score a RF unit as well.
