Default Carplay - WHIM - Wired Headset

So I am a bit confused on Carplay. I’m being told by the dealer that with a WHIM installed, Carplay will no longer work with a wired headset. Is this accurate? This doesn’t make sense to me why would they disable Carplay from working with the wired headset? What is the logic? That noone would ever use a wired headset even if they have the WHIM installed?

I know the WHIM is to use a wireless headset, but I don’t have one yet and don’t want to lose the ability for Carplay. Also, can wireless headsets like Apple airbuds be paired with the WHIM? I’ve not been able to find anything clear if it can or not.

I was using Carplay wirelessly with an OttoCast and listening via my wired headset and the plug jumper. Since I installed the WHIM and had the dealer enable it, I’ve lost the ability to use Carplay with a wired headset and with the phone plugged directly into the USB on the bike.

My ultimate setup would be to use Wireless Carplay on the GTS and listen with my Apple Airbuds. I don’t know if that’s possible though.

EDIT: Further digging, I found on harley’s website the following. I know Carplay is looking for the mic signal to work, but it’s still not clear why Carplay wouldn’t work, only that I can’t use the microphone.

Impact of Retrofit on Wired Microphone Functionality: Upon installation of the WHIM, your motorcycle’s wired microphone functionality will no longer be available. However, wired audio will continue to function as before.

Thanks,

Robert

The wiring harness for the WHIM module and the wiring harness for the wired headset system both plug into the same connector in the factory wiring harness. You can have one or the other, but not both.

702 is exactly correct, they use the same connection. It is for this reason that I decided to not install the WHIM.

Instead, I have two sets of helmets - one wired set and one wireless set with Cardo. I use the Cardo on short trips and/or if others have wireless systems that I want to connect with.

I use the wired headsets on longer trips or chapter trips - we generally use the CB.

By the way, for the WHIM to works, you need the Harley Sena; however, they are going away since Harley is moving to the new Harley Cardo. WHIM is also going away.

I have been chatting with John @ J&M - he said in a few months he will have a dongle that will plug into the headset that will allow you to connect wirelessly to any wireless headset and still have stereo capabilities as well as connect to the radio.

In an earlier post, I shared that I would get on and post a video of what I found. Hopefully this will help a lot of us.

FYI OP, if you disconnect the WHIM, the dealer had to tell your system the WHIM is no longer connected.
Also, you did lose me a little when you said you were using carplay with Ottercast, your headset and the plugged jumper. Ottercast is the wireless connector for your phone, I understand that. The plugged jumper is usually referred to the little white lug that connects under your fairing.

Since you already have a headset plug, why would you need/use a plugged jumper. Plus, hat jumper connects in the same place as the headset and/or the WHIM. So, where I am lost is - if you used the plugged jumper, how was your headset connected.

OP - regarding the next portion of your question.

When carplay first came out, you could connect without the use of a mic. Later, there was a software update - seems that apple required that a mic be connected in order for carplay to connect.

Android is a little different, you don't need a mic to connect. Say you have a Street Glide, no headset connections - just plug in the Andriod and AA comes right up. For that same Street Glide, for carplay to work, you will need to install either that jumper or install the headset kit. If you install the headset kit, you will then have to plug in a headset. You can also use the WHIM - but then you still have to have a wireless headset.
