Default Budget System

Since there are not to many on the forum doing much if any testing anymore. I have done some digging around looking for a new budget setup.
The 6.5 speakers I tested are a horn loaded coax with a ferite magnet, treated paper cone with butyl rubber surround and a 1 inch aluminum compression horn. Retail price is $169.99 Powerbass PBX-PRO6CD

They were tested in a set of speaker pods from a 2014 batwing.

The frequency response is 75 to 20k hz, power handling 150 rms with a peak of 300 watts
Ohm test was 3 ohm in free air with an Fs of 94hz when mounted in the pods used for testing.

I used a budget 600.4 amp with a retail price of $159.99 Powerbass PBM600.4
Out put is rated at 14.4 vdc
2 ohm 150 watts x4
4 ohm 75 watts x4
Bridged 4 ohm at 300 x 2

The amp was tested at 12.5v and 14.4v
1k -5db

12.5v results 18 vac output at clipping
2 ohm 162 watts per channel
3 ohm 108 watts per channel
4 ohm 81 watts per channel
Bridged 36vac
3ohm 432 watts x2
4 ohm 342 watts x2

14.0 v results 20 vac
2 ohm 200 watts per channel
3 ohm 133 watts per channel
4 ohm 100 watts per channel
Bridged 40vac
3 ohm 533 watts
4 ohm 400 watts

My conclusion on this combination is the speakers have a good midbass response when mounted in the pods used for testing. The high frequency is fairly smooth until around 7000 hz then they get pretty spicy.
I will post the RTA graph when playing pink noise.
When bridged playing pink noise at 3/4 volume I hard a reading of 118 decibels at 32 inches from the speakers.
I would suggest crossing the speaker from 70hz to around 15k hz depending on power.

For an amp and a set of horn loaded coax speakers for $330 retail this is dam good budget 2 speaker system.
The only down side I see is fitting these speakers into a roadglide speaker pod as the magnet is quite large.

Would there be an issue with these getting wet and how would this compare to a Stinger SPX700X4 Amp and a pair of MMATS PA601cx speaker setup?

As for the speakers they are has a treated cone as the Mmats have. The Powerbass have a lower response and more highs having a compression horn for a tweeter.
As for amps being comparable I can not truely answer that question as I have not tested the Stinger amp.

That's a groovy setup, kinda like the old monster Soundstream amp and Motos back in the day, only better.

Size wise how does that amp compare to an SD 800.4? I could not find the dimensions on their site.

The amp foot print is the same as the
SD 800.4 with similar output at half the price.

Best I recall the 800.4 puts out a good bit more power. Not saying the Powerbass is a bad buy, but there is a difference in output between it and an SD 800.4.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

800.4 EVO X – 4Ω
Power @ 12.6V @ 4Ω: 4 X 132 WRMS
Power @ 12.6V @ 2Ω: 4 X 200 WRMS
Power @ 12.6V @ 1Ω: N/A
Bridge Power @ 12.6V @ 4Ω: 2 X 400 WRMS

Product Dimensions: 5.8 x 4.4 x 2.0 in
Product Dimensions: 14.8 x 11.3 x 5.1 cm

Looks like they got the dimensions on the Powerbass amp now:

Specifications

  • Peak Power: 400 watts x 2
  • Power Supply: Unregulated PWM
  • Inputs: RCA
  • Dimensions (in Inches): 7"x4.43"x2"
  • Channels (mono): 4
  • 4-ohm Power: 75 watts x 4
  • 4-ohm Mono Power: 300 watts x 2
Seems like the SD may be a little smaller as well. Also might be a bit more likely to blow up? In your experience, how does Powerbass compare to DS18? I've been really pleased with that little DS18 amp I've got in my CB cubby WITH the PSM Pro that powers the Hertz neos in my rear pods.

DISCLAIMER:AM NOT AFFILIATED WITH EITHER COMPANY

This is the first post I have seen where there was any proven testing results posted in quite some time as everyone is always referring to old equipment that has been used for years

What you are posting are copied and pasted specs off of the manufacturers website which are incorrect.

There is a typo for the measurements of the PB amp as it is the same size as the SD 800.4.

I have tested and used both amps mentioned.
The SD 800 shows a dirty sinewave on the Oscilloscope from low output all the way to clipping. The PB Oscilloscope wave was clean from start to clipping. Both amps were tested back to back using the same input source and power supply.

DS18 has multiple amps, you did not give a model number for the amp you are using so it is difficult to give any comparable findings.

The speakers you are powering with your DS18 amp are extremely efficient and take very little power to get any volume and using a dsp will make a big difference.
If you want send me your DS18 amp I will test/compare it to both the SD and PB amps.

.

So before you post any more negativity open your purse, spend some money to buy the equipment to test along with the testing equipment, take time out of your schedule and post some actual facts not just what the manufacturer has posted.
When testing make sure you test apples to apples not apples to pineapple.

Comparing a SD800.4 $500 amp to a Powerbass PBM 600.4 $160 amp in the proximity of output I would use the Powerbass amp all day long for the cleaner signal and slightly lower tested output.

Rant over.
