After reading alot of the forums, I have changed my mind and am going away from my original plan to go with Hogtunes, and now am leaning toward a Soundstream amp(PN4.520D) and Polk speakers(mm651). I have a 2012 Street Glide with stock head unit (which I do not plan to change anytime soon). At this time I do not plan to run more than the two fairing speakers, but want the flexibility in the amp to run four if i change my mind. My problem is I do not know what I need for the install; wire harness or wires (length and gauge), speaker wires, adapter rings, etc. Working with electronics is not my strong suit, so I have enlisted the help of a buddy who knows his way around (which lets me go with a system that is not 100% plug-and-play). Does anyone have a shopping list so I can have everything ready to go, without the need to run to the store for extra parts during the install. Thanks in advance for any help!
I am sure UltraNutz will chime in. But here is what I learned from reading the posts on this forum...
Cycle Sounds 6.5" adapters rings - $39.00
Relocation Bracket (optional) $60.00
1 small bag of polyfil - $ 8.00 or swipe one of the old ladie's pillows
8 ft of 8ga power wire - $10.00
fuse holder to be installed at the battery - $3.00
30A fuse for above - $0.29
Speaker wire (16AWG) to connect amp to speakers
Also here is a great diagram that ultra posted and I used it when I installed mine. BTW, check the LP switch and set it to the position in this diagram.
I have seen a few posts about wrapping the speaker with the polyfill and for a few bucks I am willing to to do it, but what does this do for the speaker?
I agree with scott except for you wont need speaker wire...the polks come enough to connect to your amp and then some.
but really its that simple get the amp, speakers, adaptors and a amp wiring kit....done...oh yea get some velcro or double sided tape to stick the amp to the top of the radio.
Thank you for the correction MM. I have not pulled the trigger on the polks yet. An alternative to the velcro is using the optional bracket from Scott Ezzell's bracket I had in my list, or UltraNutz did a bracket using metal pieces with speed clips (post 15 of this thread... https://www.hdforums.com/forum/audio...20-nano-2.html). Even if you use the Velcro or Scott's bracket, it is good to go through the pics in that post.
Oh, and one LAST thing you will need if you are having a buddy help... Beer. LOL.
I would not be so quick to dismiss the ability to do this yourself. If you read the forums, look at the pictures, take the faring off and look at your bike, compare it to the pics, make a plan, you can do this. I have spent the last 2 days with the faring off, amp sitting in place (used some tape to ensure it does not slide out), looking at the pics, re-reading some threads, and tonight I will do the install. The people on this forum are fantastic and will take their time to help you take your time to do the install right.
And I am sure I will post a question or two tonight in the middle of the process.
Also, would a new head unit make a difference in sound quality? If so, any suggestions on brand/model? How much more work is it to swap out the head unit?
mhill, to answer your first question on the poly fill. This is the stuffing out of an old pillow or you can find it in the craft section at wal mart. What this does is tricks the speaker to think its in a smaller space and brings the speaker to life with much better sounds. IMO most of the people who replace their HU use a Sony HU. There are many models to choose from and the money you spend on the new HU and either biketronics or hawg wired adapter harnesses to keep the functionality of your handle bar controls and the Sony plug and play harness is money well spent with more functionality of the HU with wireless remote, USB ports for charging or adding an ipod or a jump drive full of music and the additional power of the HU you will be totally blown away!!
I hope this info helps you and please don't be shy and post any of your questions and someone with much more knowledge than I will be able to help you.
