Forum member Sean Maxwell has and is using JL 6.5" speakers. I will be doing the same in the next couple weeks using JL 6" speakers. Do a search using his name as he also included pictures...

Troop,
I believe he is looking at 6X9...............If you're going to cut them, I don't know why you wouldn't put 6X9's in there, they dwarf the 6 or 6 1/2 speakers. I don't recall anyone, but I'm sure many have done it. If you could get a really flush looking grill,......it might not turn out bad.

The stock lids have a curve that makes it difficult to mount a 6x9 speaker. If you can figure out a way to do it without it looking goofy then go for it, it would save a lot of dough. The round speakers are much easier to mount, they fit well without much gap. If you go for it be sure to post pictures!

Yep.. I went out with my tape measure and listened to speakers and measured grills. The JL C2-600x speakers have 6.5" grills and fit just perfectly on the front top of the lids. The curvature will require very little additional gasketing. Agreed not ideal but it's the compromise I went with....

I just picked up a set of Polk MM6501 component speakers, I'm trying to decide if I want to lid mount the mid-woofer or go with fairing lowers. Be sure to post pics of your lid install, it will help me decide.

Default Waterproop vs. water tight

Looking to purchase 6x9 marine speakers for lids and wondering if anyone's had problems with leakage from the speakers themselves (not from the seal around the speakers). Toying with the idea of installing them on the inside - facing the back wheel - but don't want to lose space in my bags... Thanks , in advance!

If they’re marine grade, you shouldn’t. I have Polk MM692’s and haven’t had a bit of water get in. I even ran the hose over them for a few seconds to check for leaks.
The Rockford Fosgate lid kit, is really nice. I have the modified CVO lids, and if this kit was out, and I knew then what I know now, that’s the route I would’ve gone. No painting! Harley lids! My route was a pain in the ***!

LOL a lot has changed since this thread first posted almost 5 years ago. I have the RF lid speaker kit as that was my only option for rear speakers on my 2018 sled. Well engineered and great quality fit.
