I am finally thinking of putting a new audio system in the Glide, it was missing when I got the bike and was one of the reasons I got such a good deal, I picked up a Sony cdx gt700hd head unit and am planning on using a Biketronics kit to put it into the fairing along with a splash cover, I know I will need different speakers as the OEM units are 2 ohm and the Sony is 4 ohm, but I am considering using an amp and speakers, can anyone comment on if the Polk db651 speakers with a Soundstream PN4.520D amp would be a good combination? I have some Cycle sounds 6.5" adapters ready for the speakers. Assuming that combo is good what acoustic wadding should I apply to the rear of the speakers or fairing if any?
IMO if you are going with 2 speakers in the fairing only, then I'd go the route of the Polk MM651 speakers (not the UM version) and the RF PBR300x2 amp. This is a great combination and won't break the bank. As for the acoustic material, go to walmart and get a small bag of polyfil layered material. It can be found in the craft section. Wrap the speakers to look like white cotton ***** and put the fairing cap back on after of course you follow the instructions in the sticky at the top of the audio forum for setting your amp gains.
I like the incognito look of the stock grills. If you want to dress them up a little you can get the HD chrome grills trim rings that adhere to the stock grills.
The MM651 speakers are a more closely matched speaker for the PBR300x2 and the SS amp you mentioned. They are 2.7 ohm and this is where this amp is happy producing power. The DB and DXi speakers are 4 ohm speakers. They'll sound good as well but you'll leave unused power from the amp on the table by using a 4 ohm speaker.
OK thanks, I will probably go that route then, the reason I asked about grills was because I did not know if the originals restricted the sound at all.
Ok, I will leave the original grills in then, it is already going to be difficult enough convincing the wife I need to spend neck end of $500 on the audio, I will probably do it by stealth, bit by bit.
