I've been using iTunes since it came out, and I use it and my large library of music a lot and never had a problem.
I don't get the hate for it, i find it very easy to use, integrates with all my other hardware - ipods, imac, ipad, iphone, on its own, idiot proof.
Well, thanks for the replies (even though some of the suggestions had no relevance to my problem). From what I've learned, I need a dedicated cpu. I've also learned that there are batch cd rippers/recorders that range in price from $500-$5000 and can batch rip anywhere from 25 to several hundred cd's. There are services that will go in (to a college radio station as an example) and convert all of their tapes/cd's/records into a digital format (which most radio stations use now), but their fee's are about $1 per unit (record/tape/cd)!! What a pain. But, I refuse to throw in the towel. From what it sounds like my storage options are either; a) dedicate a Mac solely to this and iTunes or, b) dedicate a Windows based computer and rely on a third party software program (like Aieesoft). Then, NEVER upgrade or add anything else to that computer. It would appear that there is a never ending cycle of upgrades and new software causing DLL and missing file problems that result in enough frustration for people to shitcan their computers for a new model that is supposed to eliminate the bugs, only to have it repeat with the next generation of upgrades and new software. Those bitches!!
If you have an iPhone, or multiple computers and use iTunes, I really suggest using iTunes Match. It's $25 a year, but it backs all of your music up to the cloud using iTunes no matter how big your music collection is. Once it's in the cloud and the first backup, all of your iTunes library is available on your iPhone without the need to actually store it on there. just pick what you want to listen to and it streams is to the iPhone. This is also good for if your computer crashes and you lose all of your music. iTunes knows what you had in your library and you can simply just redownload all of your music if you choose to or just download it as as needed or you can stream it to the computer as well. Get a new computer and know how big of a pain in the butt it is to transfer all of the music? Not a problem when you can just log in and boom all of your music is instantly available.
I am in the middle of a conversion from an old PC to a new PC. I am trying to copy my iTunes library to a memory stick and am getting a LOT of !'s in the first column and the message "The file cannot be found". I know I downloaded (and paid) for all those songs. Now I can't seem to get them copy or play. This is important because I use iTunes to get the music that I then convert to mp3 format and copy to my Garmin zumo. Any help is certainly appreciated!!
