AFAIK most aftermarket radios will challenge you to read the display no matter what....

Mine allows me to change the display color to white, as well as numerous others, and I can see it with sunlight behind me. It's not bright by any means though.

If the op is not dead set on a sony, have a look at the alpine 149bt. I recently installed this unit and have no problems seeing the display in the sun. Just another option out there!

The Sony DSX-S310BTX looks like a bargain. Does anyone know if this head unit will charge the ipod when its plugged in also?

It is a bargain. Yes it will charge an iPod and other devices, on both the internal and external USB ports.
The screen can be hard to read in direct sunlight especially when the screen is set to red, but the blue setting isn't that bad. Like mentioned, most after market head units are hard to read in the sun.

What are you guys using to maintain the handle bar controls for the radio. I know Bike Tronics sells a kit.

Also reading the Sony DSX-S310BTX doesn't have a CD player?

sanman4ever--

I went with a Biketronics kit and Hawg Wired does something similar. The 310BTX does not have a cd player. It uses a "tune-tray" that will house most iPods and some older iPhones along with USB drives. It also has a front USB connection if what you have won't fit inside. There's also Bluetooth connectivity that you can stream audio through if your device supports it.

Hope that helps.

I'm replacing my sony mex-BT4100P with a 310BTX...When I installed the mex, I cut off the RCA's from the PBR 300X2. Is that the preferred way to do it with the 310BXT?
