I don't think I have ever read a post about this so I need to ask the question. I ride with a helmet on 75% of the time. When riding 2 up we have helmets on 90% of the time. I have a helmet with a J&M elite system installed that I purchased from J&M. I purchased both the helmet and the headset together. My wife has a 3/4 helmet with the headset that comes with the Ultra Limited. At highway speeds I have to turn the headphone up to the point that the amp starts clipping or the DSP circuit kicks in or something else is happening. There are times I can't even tell what song I am listening to because the harmonics are so bad. At times it sounds like the key the song is playing in is changing like a old LP player speeding up and slowing down. I can't imagine it is the J&M elite headset since it is their top of the line. So my question is does the adding a amp to the system improve the headset or does it just affect the speakers?
I use a VinnieTracy brand headset which I purchased on EBay. (I cannot use the one that came with my Limited because I wear a 1/2 helmet). This headset can also be worn w/o a helmet and the fit and sound is great. It sounds like you may have a defective or poor quality headset.
Do you have access to a H-D or other brand of headset which you could try?
I could try my wife's HD headset. It would be dissapointing if the stock HD headset out performed the J&M elite headset. It is worth a try. Has anyone got any thoughts on how a upgraded sound system affects a headset? In my mind I thought the headset was powered from the stock head unit and would not be affected by added amps. I could be wrong however.
I have a J&M elite headset as well and mine is fine. Does your wife have a problem with the sound? It could be a problem with the connection for the cord or possibly the upper to lower cord. Switch with your wife's headset and see if you have the same problem. If you do, it is in the connection somewhere.
JM John since I am running a J&M elite headset and you manafacture one of the best if not the best aftermarket audio system for the Harley, maybe you can add to this.
1. Is the performance of a headset likely to be affected by the digital manipulation of the output on the 14 boombox causing the sound to degrade at high volume settings?
2. When boombox is upgraded with a system such as the Rokker XX series, does it increase the performance of a headset also or is it limited to just the speaker output?
OK this is my last shot at trying to get a answer on this. Maybe I'm the only one that is interested. Can't even get a rise from J&M. Come on John your thoughts/knowlege please?
