00 Electraglide Std, carbureted, stumbles at higher speeds...
Admittedly, I'm not that knowledgeable about the detailed workings of motors in general, but I'm guessing I need to start learning, even if I'm late to the game (age-wise *lol*). I'm a software engineer, with a lot of hardware engineering projects, so I figure anything is learnable with enough research/advise.
Here's what I'm dealing with - 2000 Electraglide Standard with 28k miles, carbureted (not EFI), seems like a mild cam job, and has no baffles in exhaust. Has decent power, excellent pickup, runs smooth, pops a bit on deceleration.
Like clockwork, right about 104mph it starts sputtering. I let off the throttle and drop the speed a bit, and it recovers.. but same thing once at 104ish. Will do the same thing if I'm on it super hard off the line and hit mid 90's mph. If I'm not pushing it hard, it'll skate right past the 90's and back to the same issue at about 104mph. I might also add that I'm a large fella - figure my weight being that of a couple adults on a good day (figured that might explain the mph, as opposed to what a scrawny fella might get).
My first thought since it happens so consistently was that its some sort of electronic cut-off, but its not EFI, so I'm figuring that isn't the case. It's not red-lining or anything either, so that's not it. The bike feels like it has more to give, but I can't get past this issue. What are my most typical issues that would cause this? I'm guessing fuel... Am I looking at jets? Or something more simple like fuel flow? fuel filter? issues with gravity fed carb not keeping up with supply? air intake? Something else? Whats my best area to start researching and working on to get through this issue?
are you just hitting the top RPM for your engine - possibly getting valve float or something? 104mph with a 5 speed...
check your rpms and try the same rpms in 4th maybe
Actually! If you check into to it the bike only has a 106mph top speed.
It isn't engine problems, it is gear ratio, now if he wanted to change petcock, Carb, heads, cams, trans gears, primary and secondary drives then he could kill himself a lot faster and sooner. Even a big bore kit will only get him their faster with the higher torque it would develop. :-)
by federal mandate, hd does put speed limiters on all machines, carb or efi. mine was 5.4k rpm at 120 mph. now 7.5k and who knows dropping into 4th runs the clock out. i cruise at 5k 120mph

I must be a wussy...I get nervous at about 80 mph...

There is no federal law limiting the top speeds of Harley Davidsons.

yep, went back and read the article, turns out to be a fake news thingy. but actually the feds are planing things with starting the ground work for commercial trucks.
i think the insurance companies have a hand in it also. but hd does limit speed, my 74 redlined at 7.5k my 01 was at 5.4k. the 74 could hit 134 mph the 01 do not know but it starts getting light around 120 mph and dang squirrelly around the the 5.5k and up, 6k would put it near 140 mph. got to love the sportgear and int'l gearing. about two months ago had some fun with two cagers.
