So I went with the "museum quality" 84 FXST. It got picked up by Haukbikes today. Hopefully I will have it in a couple of weeks.

Where was the 79 located? I think it may be a bike I once owned?

I think it was in Montrose. The guy sold it the day I was going to go look at it. Sounded really nice.

My 84 FXST was delivered this week by Haulbikes. Took 5 weeks, they estimated 4-6 weeks.
The bike isn't "museum quality" as advertised but I wasn't expecting it either. Numbers match. Wet clutch. It is clean. Has some aftermarket parts, chrome covers, forward controls, rear master cylinder, headlight, turn signals, chrome front wheel, exhaust - not sure what kind, it has a Samson heat shield on it. Some of the wiring looks shabby if not scary. The ignition switch is hard to turn and feels like it can go at any minute. The pictures showed an S&S air cleaner so I assumed it was a S&S carb but it has a Harley carb on it. Not sure if it is original or not. Haven't pulled it off and can't see any part number. It has points. Tires look great.
Had trouble starting it the first couple of times but it has been sitting a while. Tank looks clean but while I was in the process of siphoning the out old gas I noticed some soft white flakes. Wondering if this was the inner coating peeling off? Braided clutch and brake cables to go with the 16" apes. Throttle cables look like they need to be replaced but I'll probably just lube them up for now. Rear rotor is worn pretty good, haven't pulled the calipers yet. Handlebar bushings need to be replaced.

It's a Harley CV carb which is what the Evo came with. I retro-fitted one to my shovel, they're good carbs.

Original owner claims it was just rejetted and gone over in August. I haven't had time to warm it up nice and take a ride since changing out the gas. Would like to get the handlebar bushings in too before the ride.

Having trouble with the throttle cables. I haven't checked yet but I'm guessing they are not the right cables for the CV carb. Went to full lock turn getting out of the garage and the idle was stuck around 2500 rpm. had to pull on the cables to drop the idle back down. What year did Harley start using the CV carb so I know what cables to order?

Might be in your best interest to start over. Change the bars to something more reasonable then get cables as needed for the new bars in lieu of for those very high bars.

When he said it had 16" apes on it I thought to myself they had to go immediately. I put new bushings in and adjusted them to where I was comfortable with them for now. Hands are at just below shoulder height. What I am trying to figure out right now is what I am going to do with the foot controls. I have a 30" inseam and even as low as the bike is I am almost stretching for the controls. Not comfortable.
Can anyone identify these controls?

Definitely not stock, some aftermarket extended version. Best bet is to find the part #'s for the original parts and start looking on the Bay. It will put you back to a comfortable position.
