Default Ultima 53-644 ignition Kick

I am thinking about getting the Ultima 53-644 ignition for my 1981 FXEF. I have searched all the forums online and people ask, but no one seems to answer this question. Please answer this only if you have experience with this.

On the Ultima 53-644 ignition, it comes from the factory as 3 dead revs. Since my bike has both the electric starter and a kick, I would like to know (this is what no one ever answers...)
How hard is it to kick this ignition when it's set to 3 dead revs? Can it be done and it's just hard, or no, it's not likely that you will get it started without reprogramming it to 0 dead revs?

Thanks!

I have yet to be able to kick start mine. With points I could occasionally.

At some point a few years back they added the dead rev to the original unit and id not tell anyone - then stupidity happened - they used the same order number for both - then the stupidity became apparent - dont change the new unit to reflect the change add a K to the number of the original unit

so its 53-644K is kick start or electric start < this is the only one we sell its stupid to have both as the k works for both the other ones not let you kick start a machine — and 53-644 for electric start only that wont let you kick start the bike - but works as electric start only ignition

stupid people always seem to be in the way of progress - look at the government we now have to endure - Azerbaijani has a better economy

Johnjzjz, you said the only one you sell is the kickstart version. Do you install them so you see them perform or you just sell them? I'd really like to know from someone who has a kickstart version but also uses electric start, how well it performs. Are there any problems? Does this kill electric starters or am I thinking too much about this? It seems to me that someone should build an electronic ignition that works equally well on both kick and electric start.

The reason no one answers that question is likely because no one has ever been able to kick start an engine with electronic ignition that was not set to fire with 0 dead revs.

The 53-644K will work just fine with an electric starter. I've been running my 1340 e-start only with a D2ki (same as 53-644) programmed to zero dead revs since September, no issues whatsoever. Electric start came out long before electronic ignition, points fire every time around so...

I had a hot rod with a built chevy 400 small block. When it was hot, it was very hard for the starter to turn over. But it had an adjustable rev limiter that I turned to zero when first cranking. It spun right up to build momentum before turning rev limiter up to start it. I imagine three dead revs would help on a big inch high compression motor, similarly to compression releases.
