Last fall I purchased an insurance total ultra with minor cosmetic damage. I'm thinking the insurance company totaled it because of the stupid paint job that it had. Anyways, I have a few Harleys but I'm getting older and wanted some comfort. I can never leave anything alone so I figured restoring an insurance total would be the ideal opportunity to make "My" perfect bike. It's an EVO which I consider a great motor and plenty of power for my 70 year old butt. 26,000 miles which is a plusbut it has the MM fuel injection which I know nothing about but seems to run fine. It has a power commander 5 and I'll figure that one out. I've replaced or upgraded everything but the tank and fairing in the quest to make her mine. I did all the paint, the powder coating, rebuilt the front suspension, install a bunch of glitzy bull crap but I like it.Another couple of days and she'll be ready for the title inspection.
I'm in the process of powder coatinf the exhaust heat shields right now so the have to be added and I'm replacinf the pads and rebuilding the calipers in the front tomorrow, the backs already done.
I've not decided on the trunk and lower fairings yet. I am more of a stripped down kind of rider but I do a lot of miles so who knows. That trunk is really heavy though. Anyways, I guess this is kind of my intro, I never got around to that when I joined.
Id be worried about a bike that only had MINOR cosmetic damage and it was totaled.
Are you sure of the reason?
Is there something else about that bike that they totaled it?
I'd be worried about frame damage or something else, wouldn't take the chance without knowing personally.

But good luck!!
1 - age and value
2 - if the tab between the down tubes where the crash bar attaches gets bent, that's considered frame damage. They will total it because of that.
She had two minor cases of road rash, on the fairing and one saddlebag lid and a bent crash bar. Very minor bend in the bar at that. Because it had been repainted in that gawdawful flat black (poorly done I might add, they painted the tins, motor, chrome and all, it was considered "custom" and insurance totaled it. Frame was perfect.
