A big part of the cost of a paint job is the type of paint used. \\;Material costs are something \\;many fail to realize when \\;getting a work quote. \\;There are polyurathanes, epoxies, \\;other high quality types, and there is your basic car paint. The better the paint the longer it will last. All paints fade over time. \\;Many House of Kolor paints are up to $400 a quart. That's what your materials are gonna cost you if you get into candies and pearls. Then add 2 or three colors and your well over a grand in just materials. Any good and experienced painter is not gonna use cheap paint and put thier reputation on the job. Like what has already been said, a basic paint job will cost $1000 to $1500. ARBY's $400 job looks very nice. It's a simple pattern and the bike looks great. Be interesting to know what type of paint was used. But that painter isn't makin much of a living if that is all he does and only charges $400 per job. After quality material you don't want the prep to be skipped on. You can use the very best paint but if the time is not put into prep then you end up with crap. You get what you pay for just like anything else. If a guy quotes you a cheap price ask LOTS of questions. Pre-paint prep to your tins and quality materials are the key. Assuming you have someone that knows how to spray. Incidentally, a quart of HD yellow pearl paint is $411
like most things in life, you get what you pay for. \\; Most of my single color (custom or OEM) re-paints are around $1000, color sanded and buffed with a lifetime warranty.....
i would think $400.00 would get you a really good paint job, after all who are the kidding. you can get a really good paint job on a car for $3,000.00. a tank and fender. material might cost them $50.00-$100.00. just how much do they really need to make. i think theres a mystique about motorcycle paint jobs, they should cost a fortune. sure some of them do and you can see it, well kinda of. but for a standard one or two color paint job including body work, sealer, primer, color, clear and rubbing out well its not a bus.
Just had a customer buy a tank and wanted it color matched to his old tank my painter quoted $450.00 to sel, paint it one color, apply the harley decal, clear it, then wet sand and buff. Painter told me the paint and material not counting filler was $157.00 his cost, paint and supplies are through the roof.
I painted the chopper I built and the cost of just paint and supplies was $1200. It is true a good paint job is expensive. Preparation is the key to a good paint job. Let us know what you end up doing!
