I've been using one of those copper pot scrubber on the chrome on the rims of my heritage softail with good results. They were pretty neglected when I got it. I followed that up with Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish. I finished them up with Turtle Wax Chrome Polish. They came out good enough that I decided to keep them on the bike.
Turtle Wax Chrome polish. I'm telling you the stuff is magic. Took melted boot of my pipes, has removed tar spots. It is great stuff.
I rather agree. I've been right impressed by the things it's brought back.
Takes some time and a bit of effort, for it's not aggressive. But it really has cleaned up some nasty old bumpers and such for me.
The damage to the chrome of course remains. There's really no way to make pits and cracks and such go away, shy of replating. But now I've shiny pitted and cracked chrome, without rust stains. As long as I sorta stay on top of it, well, it's just nice looking old chrome bumpers and such now.
What is everyones go-to when it comes to cleaning old chrome and aluminum?? Im not talking about polishing your pipes or new air cleaner cover. I have a 2008 Heritage that has been sitting in a garage for the past 12 years and the chrome is pitted and dull and covered in water spots and some rust. Ive seen a lot of advertisements for Chemical Bros, MAD Iron Eraser and Rust remover, etc.
Do any of these actually work???
TIA
Car wash guys, detailers and others know all the tricks. I recently watched a YouTube video prior to showing some love to my chrome spoke wheels. This is what the guy did.
wash and dry the chrome
#0000 steel wool is used by hand to buff out all the chrome. Use it dry, nothing else is needed for the restoration of the chrome.
I was surprised how well it works. Afterthe steel wool process you can apply a spray-on type of wax or polish like Maguires "Final finish" or Turtle Wax "Spray on Wipe off".
There's tons of chrome cleaners, polish, and waxes out there but, I have found nothing that restores chrome like #0000 Steel Wool.
For aluminum, this works good by hand, and also works better with the little buffer wheels in this cheapo kit.
Good on chrome, use with 0000 steel wool.
