Even that super fine steel wool is micromarring your chrome, anythign abrasive does, over time you will certainly motice it. Magic Eraser supposed to work very well for burtn things on pipes.

It seems as though I sounds like I am a sales man for this stuff because every time I post I am mentioning this stuff.

I have had marks on pipes from time to time, I think from my boots. again today when I was cleaning the Bobber I once again noticed a mark on my exhaust,I don't think that it was my boot that made the mark, but whatever it was the neverdull got it off but had to rub a little.

You can get it at Wal-Mart, I use it on everything that shines on my bike. I just wipe it on, let it dry, and wipe it off useing a microfiber towel.

Melted plastic on pipes...I 1st use denatured alcohol. If that doesn't cut it I will use acetone. Put a little on a cloth and rub lightly.

On our aircraft when ever somebody melts a probe cover to one of the probes we have mesh kits to get it off. It's super fine cloth sandpaper so fine it feels soft. We just wet it and rub takes a hell of a long time but the plastic comes off and the shine sticks. I'm sure there are easier methods as some of those listed but I just wanted to add my two cents.

Try SOS pad with water for a lubricant, works well to remove boot sole or plastic on exhaust............

BTW easy on the rubbing, don't scrub and use lots of water............
