Detailing Tips
Detailing Terms
We would like to share with you some of the most commonly used Detailing Terms and their explanations.
Acid Rain Spots:
These spots are produced when the sun evaporates standing water on the motorcycle surfaces. These spots are created by acid etched or mineral spots. Acid etch are deposits from smog, fuel deposits and chemicals that the surfaces maybe exposed to. Mineral deposits are white, calcium or salt deposits left after water evaporates.
Oxidation:
This is the dulling appearance of the painted surface or clear coat finish. Oxidation is the result of exposure to ultraviolet light and the pollution we are exposed to. Dark colors oxidize quicker because they absorb more ultraviolet light than lighter colors.
Carnauba Wax:
Waxes are blends of Brazilian Carnauba Wax , polymers, oils and gloss agents in a petroleum solvent base. Waxes provide an renewable glossy barrier that protects the painted surface These waxes provide a deep rich shine and are non abrasive. Unfortunately Carnauba Waxes start to melt at 160 degrees F. which degrades the protection value to painted surfaces and should be re-applied every three months.
Synthetic Wax:
These waxes are man-made polymers, oils, and gloss agents formulated to protect paint and clear coated surfaces. They can be water based, petroleum solvent based or a combination of both. These types of waxes are very durable and can last up to six months which is an advantage over Carnauba Waxes.
Compounds:
Compounds are formulas of lubricants, solvents, water and abrasive minerals which can be liquid or paste form. They are to remove a portion of the top paint or clear coat which contains scratches, water spots, blemishes and swirls.
Polishes:
Polishes are formulas of oils, solvents, water, clay and minerals designed to enhance surface gloss and remove old wax, minor swirls, compounding haze and light oxidation. Polishes may contain light mounts of abrasive material to provide a better burnish action to provide a rich gloss to the painted surface. Polishes are not a protectant, they enhance the gloss of the painted surface only.
Elbow Grease:
The amount of hard work to achieve the desired out come.
