Default worth it just for a color?

I'm torn.... hunt down a 2014 charcoal pearl street bob, which is ok but not as good of a fit for my 6'3" as a wide glide, and needs lots of mods (approx $1500 worth)? Or get a lightly used wide glide which is what i want form wise but not paint wise?....

Any estimates on a quality paint job for the fairings, tank, lower forks, and triple tree of a wide glide ( goal is to get the semi blacked look of the 14/15 year street bobs and charcoal grey)

Im leaning more towards getting the wide glide and modding the heck out of it rather than settling, just for a stock color... guidance or experiences?

we do a package deal on powder coating trees and lowers for HDF members for $150 includes dust caps free. for paint on the fairing/tank in charcoal i would say somewhere around $500-700 would be what most painters would want

I just had my fenders (in pics below) and the complete saddlebags painted, only thing not painted was the tank, $800 for all of it. So I would break it down to maybe a $150 for each fender and $250 each for the bags. So like Joe said, a good solid color paint would run around $700 for fenders, tank and fairing. Most important thing to do is look at the work, if you have a drag strip or hot rod weekly hangout near you go and find some good paint jobs and ask them for their painter (don't ask at a bike show, they'll charge you more because they think they can).

Awesome. I think you guys just sold me, Wide glide it is. I know i' ll be happier not being pressured into getting a model i dont really want just for colors. The wide glide will fit me better, plus this way i can get my hands dirty. more of a project bike plan now

With that decided...does anyone have examples of a metallic grey color, like charcoal, with a hue of other colors, specifically orange or black? I like those mixed/tinted pearl paint jobs but cant seem to find examples. I know ive seen them before.

Like primarily grey, but when you see it from an angle or under certain light, you see a hint of orange, or a hint of black.

I think the 'hint of color' you might be referring to is from a pearl applied in/with the clear coat. Again, ask the painter/shop, most are craftsmen at heart and look forward to the challenge of getting it the way you want it.

Be advised, cool, color changing or pearl paint will cost almost twice as much as plain or normal paint, but, its worth it. Same with actual clear paint/coat, the more expensive stuff yields a much nicer finished product.

If it helps you, this is what the guy that painted my fairing and side covers used.

Yea what your looking is a pearlescent effect. Check out :

http://www.tcpglobal.com/Automotive-...rin-1st-gen_2/

There are alot of different pearls for different effects. Some are quite pricey some are not. They are added either to the paint or a mid coat clear (depending on effect/depth), not the final clear. They are so many different possible combinations its best to get a shop to do a sprayout before you decide on a final color. Some colors just don't work well with some pearls.

I wouldn't buy a bike that didn't fit me just because of the color. That's something that's easily changed. When I was looking for another Fat Bob the only one I could find was denim pewter. I have a think against silver vehicles, but I bought it anyways since I knew how much stuff I was going to be changing out. A paint job is pretty easy and fairly inexpensive as far as Harley modifications go.
