Default Stage 1 for a FXDWG

Hey Everyone!

I'm a noob. I apologize. But I just got into the HD world by buying my first bike last month, a 2014 wide glide. I love it! And I can't believe the HD community that exists. I had a random HD shirt on and 3-4 people came up and start chatting with me.

I've searched the forums and can't find exactly what I'm looking for. The adage is true that buying a bike is just a down payment. I've been reading about state 1 modifications. Sorry if this is stupid but I'm new to this whole thing. Is a stage 1 mod basically swapping out the air intake and getting a new exhaust? What have y'all done? With labor, am I looking at $2K? I'm not looking to go top of the line but I don't want to skimp either.

Sorry if this is a dumb *** post but I'd appreciate y'alls input like what parts and components you have used. Thx.

essentially, high intake air-cleaner, new exhaust, and you will need a new ecm. you can get one that takes preloaded maps, or get the bike tuned.
I think $2k sounds like a lot, I recall I did mine for about half that, but it depends on the parts you pick. (and If you go with a Dyno or a premade map)

I did V&H slips-ons, S&S stealth, and the HD SERT, and got Dyno'd. it was a lot, but changes the bike performance and sound substantially.

I did about the same to my Street Bob: S&S Stealth air, V&H slip on mufflers, and a FP 3 tuner with canned map. Entire project took an hour and cost something less than $1,000. Bike runs great.
If you poke around on the forum there are a lot of pretty detailed threads on Stage one upgrades, tuners, etc. Lots of different opinions. Good luck. Have fun!

I went with V&H Big shots, Screamin Eagle A/C and Cobra Fi2000 auto tune. Best I remember it was around $1400.

Exhaust-price all depends on what you want. I got my Rinehart Churchills for $250.

Air Intake-pretty much any performance one is a high flow, mostly (not all) are more about the look you like. Price wise, again depends on what you want or can spend. I got a Big Sucker 2 for $75 from a local Indy at his closing the door event.

Tuner-price can start around a $100 for Xieds from Nightrider.com to a full on ECM replacement like the Thundermax. I just picked up new tuner from Superchips called the Vigilanti EZ which is half price right now for forum users, $150.

Total in my system, $475 all installed by myself.

Shop around, use the classifieds here and find some good deals. Do some great research and if you can turn a wrench, pick up a maintenance manual and do the work yourself, saving some money for more toys.

2000$ sounds like a stealer price, I bought v&h big radius, k&n filter and powertunner from fuel moto for about half that price, fairly easy to do with some patience. If you dont want to put hands on it look for a good local shop they wont charge an arm amd a leg for this kind of labor.

BlueAngel73 and 103RatRide, thanks for the head's up. That's super helpful.

As a noobie, what would you say people's thoughts are on using the HD dealership to have work done? I'm not necessarily mechanically inclined and so there's a fear that I'm going to F up my bike if I start tinkering on it. Or at least screw something up that I won't know is a problem until it becomes a problem.

Do people shy away from the Harley dealership due to $$$ or is it a viable alternative? They guys were I bought my bike are cool but I don't have a sense yet.
