Default shifter Lever slipping

I have a '99 Dyna Super Glide and my shifter lever is slipping on the gear post from the tranny. I can not tighten it enough to stop the slippage - what is the best fix, short of pulling it appart to replace........

I wonder if you could loosen the bolt, slide the shifter linkage off the splined piece, and wrap something around it to give it more grip then re-install?

It might not be that bad to replace the splined piece on a 5 speed though.

I would just replace the splined piece, its really not that hard to do. Dont be intimidated by the job, it's really easy despite what a dealer shop may tell you.

The shift lever is a cast piece and once worn will only get worse and may eventually tear up the splines on the shifter shaft (or pawl) and then you will have to take the whole gear set out to replace the shifter pawl. We have a stainless steel shift lever with broached splines so it won't happen again if you decide to replace it.

It looks like the shift pawl is the warn part, almost smooth with no grooves left, the actual lever looks to be OK. Can the lever be welded onto the pawl or is there too much heat in this process that will harm the gear seals.

How big of a job is it to replace the shift pawl ? The dealer says it's a major all day job

A quick search and looks like the gearset does have to come out. Since winter is coming if you're mechanically inclined and aren't afraid to take most of your bike apart it's worth doing yourself. I can only imagine the labor cost.

General rundown:
Remove primary outer and inner including compensator and clutch pack
Remove inner primary race from mainshaft with a puller
Remove exhaust, clutch cover, transmission trapdoor etc to pull gearset away with the trapdoor.
Replace the shifter pawl, reassemble.

That's the gist of it for the 6 speed, more detailed steps in the book and you'll need some specialty tools from george's garage. I can't speak for the 5 speed as I haven't done it to one before.

Wow - that does sound like a lot of work and it may be more than my skill level can supply. I'll check with a buddy to see if it's something he would like to tag team with me on.

you can also drill a small hole though your shifter and the spine, tap that or use a set pin, if you tap it you can use a set screw, easy fix and you will not have to pull it all apart

Sounds like you may be confused a bit on the part names. If it just the lever and splined shaft it goes on pin it like JRK said.

I assume your talking about the shift lever on the side of the transmission? Noticed my lever was loose on my 05 FXD. Tried tightning allen bolt which didn't work. I did a search on these forums and alot of the levers were fixed by pulling out allen bolt out and putting in a regular bolt.

I tried that on the 05 and it took up all the slop in the lever, and is good as new. I did this a couple of weeks back and the lever is still tight.
