Default Bags on my Dyna

Looking for opinions here...

Started out on a Nightster. Loved it. Decided I wanted something bigger. Traded for a Street Bob after 1 year. Been loving it too. The sales guy (who sold me both bikes) joked I'd be back after another year trading for a Street Glide.

I can't say I'm not temped, but I really like my Dyna. The only thing that's been bugging me is I really hate wearing a backpack commuting back and forth to work. I think I'd prefer some bags, but I'm afraid they won't be big enough.

I'd really like to be able to carry a hoodie/jacket/whatever, lunch sack, and small laptop messenger bag that's no larger than about 15-16" x 11-12" x 5-6".
  1. I could suck it up and just keep wearing a back pack. I just don't care for arriving at work with a sweaty back.
  2. I could go with a sissy bar and strap my stuff to it. This would work, but I'm not a huge fan of the look.
  3. I could go with some bags. I actually like the look of a nice set of bags on any bike so this one's the least offensive to me.
Found a bunch over the last few months:
  • I really like the BAD&G hard bags. I'm almost certain they're too small, but the guy won't respond to my inquiries.
  • I like the H-D leather bags, but I'm concerned I won't be able to fit my stuff in them. Looks like the slanted design will work against me.
  • The Viking bags look nice for the price. Also concerned about size and the slanted design.
  • I ran across the Hardstreet Slimbags and they look pretty nice. They appear to be big enough and they even sell a briefcase style bag.
  • The Cycle Visions Bagger Tail setup looks super nice. Concern here is that they'd be too big for the bike.
I like the aesthetics of the BAD&G bags, the overall design/look of the H-D bags, the value of the Viking bags, the practicality of the hardstreet bags, and the engineering of the cycle visions setup.

So given that I'm not into touring and just need storage for around town and during my commute, what do you all think?

This is what I did for around town with my solo seat on the bike it's a solo rack that gos over the fender. Nice because it's quick release & I mounted a t style bag to it. When I take it off I can replace with a quick release backrest using the same mounting hardware.

Okay, here is my opinion. Get some saddlebags. Once you get them, you`ll be surprised at how often you will use them. They are just so convenient to have. I bought the Leatherpros retro t sport quick detachable bags early this past spring, figuring I would only use them occasionally but I was mistaken. I have only removed them to clean my bike. They come in cordura or leather and are comparable in price to the HD bags but much better in quality and function.

HD bags for me, I went hard mount, I don't plan on taking them off except to change a tire.
Big enough for me. Ipad, jacket, hoodie in one side.

I keep reading the same thing about never wanting to take them off once they're on. I'm definitely more interested in hard mount bags.

I had no idea the LeatherPros Retro T-Sport Saddlebags came in leather. I though it was just the cordura. I'll have to look into that.

Yeah, those look pretty damn good to me. Any chance I'd be able to fit a small laptop bag in there?

For posterity... Here's a thread on the leather FXDXT Retro T-Sport bags from LeatherPros. They look pretty nice, but I might actually like the codura version better.

Edited to add this thread by Garry from LeatherPros...

And this thread too.

Yes, the leather ones are the ones I bought. You won`t be disappointed with either of the two and the cordura ones are almost a couple hundred dollars less than the leather ones. Plus, he stands behind his product.

Earlier this year I had the same issue with my Iron. Wanted soemthnig other than a backpack to bring my stuff back and forth. Like you I didn't like the look of the sissy bar.

I ended up going with the tall detachable HD sissy bar and a bag from Walmart that slips right over the bar and has a quick connect buckle to lock it in. The bag works perfectly and over time the sissy bar grew on me. I never take it off now. The bag is water proof and holds my lunch, laptop, and an extra set of clothes.

This is a great place to start, using the detachable rack. You can attach just about any bag to it.

The Cycle Vision setup is very nice......but also very pricey. If you search, you will find a few guys on here that have them, Surfchop is one that comes to mind. I, and a few others on here, have modified some touring bags and with some twisted luck, managed to mount them to our bikes.

It really all comes down to whow much you want to invest (time and/or money) to get what your after.
