I have used a back pack and they suck for long trips. If you absolutely have to rock one for an extended trip I would try one designed for backpacking perhaps. I bought my backpack in the motorcycle section at Walmart though. It can be worn as a backpack or put on a backrest/sissy bar. You might look into a duffel bag and just strap it down on your rear fender.
I use a back pack to commute back and forth to work, I really don't want bags on this bike. I also have a bagger I use on weekends with the old lady or to travel, the one I use is just a small cheap back pack I think its a Jansport, I would hate to try and pack both of our crap for a weekend trip in my back pack, If it was just me I don't think it would be a problem.

Avoid the messenger style bags. They will kill your shoulder and back. I have used maxpedition packs for years. They are extremely durable and have cinch straps to compress the packs. I have used them riding and in the military and they are as comfortable as one could hope for. Also maxpedition has numerous of attachment pouches so you can set it up for your needs. They are a little expensive. But you get what you pay for.
