my low fuel warning consists of back firing and sputtering...tells me that it is time to switch to reserve, then I got roughly 20 miles to find a gas station...
I keep worrying that I am going to forget to switch it back to main after filling up and it really will be empty when it starts the fuel starvation routine...Murphy's Law...
Although it may not be accurate it is helpful.
My thought is why are you running it so low in the first place.
I know I can go 175 miles on the super glide and 150 on the wide glide. Once I get to a 1/4 tank I fill up. Never know when a emergency will pop up and I have to be prepared just in case.
The one thing that was drove in my head when serving as recon in the Army is: always be prepared for anything at any time at any given moment.
Your mechanical fuel gauge uses a float to estimate how much fuel is left in the tank. That float signal also feeds the electronic indicators. In theory a float sitting in liquid will rise and fall as the amount of liquid changes.
With gasoline as it goes down in volume the void left in the tank is replaced with vapor. The vapor changes the pressure in the tank affecting the float and accuracy of fuel level estimates. This is also the reason why you may see one level when you turn the bike off and a different level when the bike is turned back on a few days later. The vapor pressure will rise over time. You can remove the cap before starting the bike to relieve any built up pressures.
You will also see inaccurate estimates if your fuel cap does not effectively "breathe" creating a vacuum. If that is the case you will likely hear a rush of air when you remove the cap.
You should also avoid filling your tank to the top of the filler opening. There needs to be some space between the fuel and the cap (breather) for it to work efficiently.
Just run it until it runs out and switch to reserve.
It works for me...
yepper, that works for me also...the SG quit at a stop light just this afternoon on my way home...time to switch to reserve and get to a station...one day, though.....
