I have a question regarding the fuses. I have 2003 Dyna Super Glide and was adding some running lights. Well, I had to change the blown fuse due to a short, and to my surprise, when I took off the fuse cover, I saw that someone has put a 30A fuse in the lights slot.....I am no electrician, but according to manual, and to what I have read, it should be a 15A fuse.
I bought the bike used, so I am not certain what has been done to it in the past.
Anyway, I have replaced the 30A fuse with 15A fuse. I have checked the lights and all the things, and it all works fine.
Did I do it correctly or should I have put the 30A fuse to the lights slot?
If the book says 30 then 30 should be used to protect the circuit.
It would seem that the fuse should have been a 15A.
Using a higher rated fuse is not suggested since it could be over rated for the circuit design.
Previous owner probably only had that fuse available and used it.
Probably a case of the previous owner sticking in the only spare fuse he had at the time sometime in the past. If its working fine with the correct rated fuse then don't worry too much about it.
The wire gauge used on a bike is rated to the fuse it has to blow. So if it is supposed to have a 15A fuse then it must have a 15A fuse in it otherwise you could have a fire in the case of an overload/short circuit. I don't think a 30A fuse is used at all in that fuse box.
The job of the fuse is to protect the wiring, NOT the accessory. If HD states that the fuse should be 15 Amp then that is what you should put back.
While you are about it you should check the other fuses and replace any that are not the correct rating with fuses of the correct rating.
Over rated fuses could easily lead to the wiring catching fire.
I am an Electrical Engineer so please heed the advice before you have a disaster to contend with.
