Default Mids shifter shaft/lever question

I'm about to install Fwd controls on my 14 Sb. Like us all I've seen the video on how to cut the lever from behind inner primary and plan on doing this. My question is, why does the outer primary have to be removed to accomplish this? Is there something on the shaft holding it in being the reason for outer removal? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is a sleeve over the shaft with O-rings. You need to take the cover off to remove the sleeve and shaft.

There is a bracket to secure the shift arm on the inner primary to the engine. Also a cap to put over the shaft at the outer primary insp cover. No need to cut the shaft.
If you do cut the shaft and remove it, you remove the outer primary cover to plug the hole thru the inner primary with a special made plug. Then get a new outer primary inspect cover without the hole for the shifter.

Just finished job, on my 2014 didn't remove outer at all. Cut lever off the back and rest slide right out the front with zero effort.

Is there a push in plug for the hole?

How did you plug the hole in the inner primary without removing the cover?

I did my '07 without removing inner or outer. Used the hack saw method for mid shaft removal. The plug for the outer case just pushed in. Footboard kit from harley came with a black one and chrome. I have since removed my inner and outer primary for compensator replacement, no sleeve over the shaft with O-rings on my bike as mentioned above. Maybe the '14's changed, not sure.

Yeah, the kit came with a push in plug for the front hole.

I haven't yet. Thinking I'm just gonna go to Lowes and see if I can find the right size plug. Nothing too serious as fluids don't go through there. Its just a dry passage for the shaft to pass through.

Yeah, no removal of inner and outer on my 14 here. Cut, and remove. Kind've jealous of your black plug, mine only came with a chrome one. Oh well, guess that will work.

Just an FYI, it is basically a tunnel and not a hole. No oil will leak out unless the gasket is bad between the two primary halves.

I found a round, chrome plug that I just siliconed in place about 8 years ago and has not budged at all.

I'd scuff it up and rattle can it. Mines shinny black, not wrinkle like my primary, you could get wrinkle in a rattle can, semi gloss or flat.
