Since like 1968 registartion goes my the frame's VIN number. Prior to frame VINs, it was the motor numbers. Only on a recent salvage/rebuilt title application was I asked for the motor number.
I wouldn't say anything. Just hold on to the mso in case you sell it. The only time Ca looks at a engine # is if they verify it when a vehicle is brought in from another state
Not sure what the concern is. Any motor in ca is legal, no smog checks on motorcycles.
But Ca registration requires a engine number, just don't tell DMV you changed it.
Seems to be a lot of bad info about this subject on the forum. In CALIFORNIA if you get stopped by an LEO and he/she happens to check your #'s completely, then the frame and engine #'s had better match your registration or your mike will most likely be impounded. I know, several are going to say they have never had their #'s checked but that does not mean you or them never will have.

Just carry a photo copy of the mso with your registration. ....I haven't had a engine # checked by a cop in 25 years. ....
If engine number/VIN on reg does not match the actual numbers on the frame/motor....definitely risk the losing the bike.
If you don't look, ride or hear like the "part", your risk is much lower....if you do, well, your rolling the dice. You come across a cop who knows what they are looking at, then your screwed.
