I just put an S&S 111" crate motor in my FXR af ew months ago. All you do is ride it to the DMV with your MSO and they come out to check the numbers, then issue you a new pink slip. The only difference on the new pink will be the number change of the new motor. Everything else remains the same. That's it, it's that simple.
And there is the answer, get the new engine #'s on the title so there are no possibilities of future problems. Do it the "right" way.
Back to the original question - yes. Tried to order one thru Hales HD (good discount and Jim is great to deal with!!). Everything was fine until my shipping address came up (NorCal). Nope, cannot ship to CA. Checked couple other dealers - same story. Asked about a Stage IV Kit - same deal- not legal in CA and will not ship to CA. Can ship to another state and go pick it up, but a mjor PITA. Thank goodness my shop had access to a Stage IV kit which I had installed. No issue with motor/ frame numbers matching and plenty of oomph in the ole girl.
Same crap & struggles with firearms, tobacco, insurance and just about everything else in this state. Gotta get creative
Not completely. I've lived in a lot of states, since I left SoCal in '97 (including a dozen years in HI)... Sure, there is some pretty bass awkward politics here, but CA (NorCal, now), with all it's problems, is where I want to raise my children!
If you bring an un numbered engine (or trans or whatever.) You take your MSO and unit to your local CHP office. They will issue (and embed) a new number for you. Last time I did it, it was $20 and took 15 minutes. No change on the registration cost.
Oh yeah, as far as "never getting the engines/frames checked out." Happened to me and a dozen other riders @ a Chevron station on Florida Ave in Hemet about 15-20 years ago. The only guy that had a problem was the owner of the local authorized Harley Davidson dealer in Oceanside. Boy, did we give him crap for that! The sheriff still let him ride up to Idylwyld...then back to Oceanside. It was an insurance paper issue, if I remember.
