I say reduce your oil level a bit and see if that helps.

Hmm..Like others have said, I too do not have this issue. Mine are as clean now as the day I installed them. I don't get any smoke or oil residue...Keep us posted.

You may need new umbrella valves.

I was running it in the garage to cure some exhaust header paint and it happened on the second heat cycle. I put a few add ons and messed with the program. After 15 minutes smoke came out of the breather bolts. It got too hot. I put the old program in and everything is working fine. I am new to working on bikes and unfortunately I learn things the hard way.

Thanks for all the input.

Sounds like the OP got his issue resolved.

However, as we head into summer, there are a few things that can be done to reduce the likelihood of oil getting too thin and blowing out the crankcase breathers in the hotter weather.
  • Run the oil at the optimum level
  • Run the optimum weight oil
(20-50 is Not the same as the straight 50 or 60 weight that Harley recommends for warmer weather)

Here are a couple of links to a threads on the subject-

It depends how you ride and how much oil you keep in the pan. Like I said I used to have alot more blow by when I would keep the oil topped to full. Besides the bikes are all the same and yet all different to some degree. what works for one guy may not for the next. OP's may be clogged who knows? Alot of new guys post questions and offer no info such as what year / mileage, did he buy it used, any motorwork, if the bike was sitting in some garage for years and so on.
the rocker arm support plate hole is drilled out to .125 = 1/8'' hole per Hillside cycle. helps the oil not collect under the breather assembly. mine are done so are Maddghost's mine oil level is at the full mark when engine is at operating temp.

I've seen steam a few times on colder mornings with mine, nothing to worry about, I mean think about it... You have a positive pressure when the bike is hot and you kill it. Then cold and moist air gets sucked in as it cools off.

But I do get a little oil coming out of them under lots of hard riding, and currently my oil level is tip topped off. Enough that I've had a fine mist on my intake pipe, tank, rear cyl rocker box cover, battery cover, and rear shock cover. I'm going to run my oil level a little lower and it should help and especially once I get my cooler on this week. I also clean my bike quite regularly so it's not much an issue to me.

I get a little mist on the battery box and rear exhaust pipe with the breather bolts, but nothing a quick wipe with a cloth every once in a while won't take care of. I try to run my oil level at the recommended (1/2 way between low and full) mark.

thanks target I knew I wasn't far off, that's why I said don't quote me! I keep my oil to the half way cold and at running temp she is just under the full mark in case I hadn't mentioned it. That way I barely get anymore blowback.
