Did you adjust the clutch cable and clutch basket (inside the primary). My first stop during the maiden voyage would have been back at the dealer. Didnt you test ride it?

They should take care of it. Clutch adjustment would be the first place I would look.

Default Shifting

Harleys shift a lot better if the bike is still rolling. If you are in 6th gear and come to a stop, good luck getting it back to first gear while stopped.

Try not to stomp on anything as it will end up either broken or just plain ol' bad.

Not exactly sure of the exact issue your having, but I will say with almost any motorcycle as said above they shift much better when rolling. If you come to a stop in say like 4th gear cause you had no choice I have found that engaging each gear by just letting the clutch out a tiny bit will allow you to downshift while stopped. It definitely sounds like a clutch adjustment issue from what your explaining.
