Sorry if I missed the answer to this question in one of the other exhaust threads. Okay, my local shop has a nice set of 2in to1 exhaust pipes and they were trying to talk me in to them for my 07 FXD that currently has slash cut slip ons, I like the way my current pipes sound but was thinking about something a little deeper sounding, anyway, the 2 in to 1's don't have an o2 sensor port and I asked the shop, (Independent, closest Harley shop is 55 miles) and they tell me the bike would run fine without and I would "Have" to change the air cleaner or put any type power commander etc. I am not a mechanic but this doesn't sound right to me?, any help is appreciated.
if your not going to run o2 sensors you will need a controler, ie power commander V. and if your going to do that go a head and put an air cleaner on it and tune it once instead of twice. A lot of cash for a new sound and little power gain. you will notice the power but it wont be but maybe 10 hp.
You know, the O2 ports being welded in is no big deal, don't be intimidated like I was.... Had the self same problem a few years ago an a superglide I wanted to put some used exhaust on. The used set I was buying was for an older model, but mounted tie same.
Went to a muffler shop with 2 nuts the size of the sensors, he drilled 2 holes in the exhaust, and welded the nuts on..... Cost maybe $15 bucks, and he was glad to do it, and he did a really good job, took 10 minutes
I had not even considered having the o2 bungs welded on, the pipes are a couple years old but never used so they look new. now, if I do change and have the o2 bungs added, will I need a new air cleaner and maybe a fuel management module or should it be good? When I took a safety course last summer my bike would get hot and begin to sputter and if I ran it down the road it cooled down and was fine, I was told it may be because of the slash cut exhaust without any other mods?
You don't NEED a tuner and stage 1 air cleaner..... Shouldn't change anything but sound for you..... If performance is what you're after then I'd suggest it.
If sound, you'll be just fine! And for what it's worth, I used plain old galvanized nuts, and then high temp paint to cover the welds. A tip, always use antiseize compound on your sensors.... Good luck with your decision.
If you are going to have the bungs welded in, I recommend finding a Harley Indy that knows what he is doing - placement is important. If you get a hi-flow/stage 1 air cleaner then yes go get a fuel tuner and enjoy he extra power and better running motor.

Agreed!
I took pictures to the muffler shop I went to, so I would have the nuts welded in the correct location

If you are just changing the pipes you should be fine, if u was to change both the Air Cleaner and the pipes then you would need some type of Fuel Management. A good amount of people get Fuel Management even with just changing one thing as Harley's come from the factor lean. Devin and Kevin(DK) use the Power Vision and are 100% happy. For more of a budget solution people use the Xied's, we have had reports of many people being happy with this option also. However, i would go with a free flowing Air Cleaner like the Outlaw 587 or the 636v, these Air Cleaners do not allow all the hot, dirty and oily air to get back in.
This subject interests me also. I recently purchased a 2014 Wide glide and had Vance & Hines big radius pipes installed along with a screaming eagle air cleaner. I had the screaming eagle pro super tuner used to Dyno tune the bike at the dealer. The end result was a minimal gain in hp and a large decrease in mpg. If I had it to do over I would have just installed a V&H fuel pak instead of the Dyno tune. I'm curious about long term effects. Is my engine running cooler?...will it have better long term engine wear??? Overall I'm happy with how the bike runs but feel like it was a waste of money on the Dyno machine.
