Default broke an exhaust stud today

broke an exhaust stud today.. not sure if it could have been prevented or not, but most the stud is still in there & tight too, going to have to be drilled out,

of course it was the one behind the downtube, only about 3" of clearance..

bike is going to dealer Monday for other things So I'll have them fix it,

hopefully they have the tools to do this with pulling engine or something crazy like that,,

doubt they'll cover it under warranty since pipes are after market but i'll ask. hopefully won't cost more than $100 to fix...

this must happen a lot,,

anybody have any similar stories?

I would go to a reputable Indy. You'll save money.

yep, my indy is out of town right now,, but the dealer is really convenient because I work with-in walking distance. and I don't trust the yamaha's guys to change the rear tire, that might sounds dumb but they are supposed to repack the swing arm bearings as well. hopefully the dealer has experience with these broken studs and has a quick way to fix it that wont cost a lot..

+1 on finding a good independent shop. The dealer is going to rape you on that and the service too....gl!

Those can sometimes be taken out with a hammer and a well sharpened punch. I'd give it a whack if it were mine. (pun intended) LOL

My H-D dealer charges $100+ per hour and uses book time. My Indy charges $75 per hour and only charges what it would take with no distractions.

With the right tools, knowledge and lots of penetrating oil, exhaust studs aren't that bad to extract. Broken a few in my day and it just adds more beer drinking time to your project.

ok, but the dealer should be more organized, have better tools & more knowledge, meaning they can get more complicated things done quicker, like fixing broken studs..

I do take my bike to an Indy for many things but sometimes if I'm doing something quick I like the convenience of the dealership.. especially because I happen to work 2 minutes away..

just hope this stupid stud that's designed to break doesn't cost me an arm & a leg..
