Default 97 Dyna Harness Connection Issue

So I rewired my 97 with a harness from a 98.

Every connection in the rear has a home so far except this one. This cable is coming from right before the starter and is part of the old harness set up.

The new harness has that same push on connector on the engine side but it is part of the start group of wires (oil sensor wire, starter spade, ground and brown wire pop on connector). So in the image, the arrow connector, what is this? And if anyone knows is this the pop on from the 98 harness and its just wired without a connector for that year?

Any insight could help.

Red, White, Black?
It looks like that big blue arrow is pointing to the Speed Sensor.

Yep, red black white, small wires.

Say its the speed sensor, are there models where that wire is built into the rest of the harness, with no connector?

I'm not sure about that. I'm working on a 98 XL which seems very similar to yours.

Do you have wiring diagrams for your bike and the donor? If not...i would try to locate some.

08fxd, we might be able to help eachother down the line sometime considering my rebuild.

Desert, I haven't looked for a diagram yet considering its just that its really ust that one wire, but it looks like it might be the speed sensor like 08 had mentioned but ill have to take a look around.

if it's red white and black then its the speed sensor. Plugs in to the wires coming from your speedo. It's the same for 97 and 98. Just checked my service manual (97-98) and bike (97). If you're putting a 98 harness on a 97 then you might have to get a 98 neutral switch as well because 98 uses a 2 wire switch (tn/bk) and 97 uses a single wire (tn).

Here's a pic of the speedo and tach off my 98 XL 1200.
The plug on the shorter lead tucks into the headlight bucket... the plug on the long lead runs down the back bone and plugs into the Speed Sensor under the seat.
