Default Older Dynas

I am going to show off just how new I am to Harley's with this post, but how would a 1999 Dyna compared to the newer bikes. I figured I would buy a newer motorcycle when I got the cash but I have come across several late 90's dynas that seem pretty reasonably priced (under $6000). How is the dependability on these older bikes? Power? Parts availability? Quality of ride?

Thanks in advance.

Default Love my 99 Wide Glide

With the 99 being the first year for twin cams the only weekness I have found are the cam chain tensioners. They should be checked at 30k. It took me about 6 hours to replace them both on my bike. Other than that she has never failed to start and run great. I wouldn't trade my girl for ANY bike on the road.

I upgraded the suspension and with progressive fork springs and shocks and the comfort and handling are exactly as I like them.

I agree, I've had an 03 for the past 9 months and I love it. I like somethings about these older ones than the new ones, more chrome on the old ones is 1 example. different, more traditional classic styling, the old ones have a more solid, heavier, smoother riding feel to them but still have plenty of torque. the newer ones feel lighter and faster.

I can't say one is better than the other, but there are some awesome deals on the older models, just check this out... this is just a beautiful motorcycle, you won't see any new ones with this much chrome, it would cost over $25k to built one of these...

the older ones are a bit tougher to find accessories for, Harley doesn;t make a whole lot any more, all the basics are there in the aftermarket though, bags, shields, & seat. etc.

Pre '99 is the Evo motor, which is still one of the best motors made. Plenty reliable, especially if stock. Twin Cams are all pretty bullet proof or fixable. The '06 Street Bob had gear whine with the new 6 speed box. '09 was a frame redesign/improvement, but nothing you can't live without.

I have a 97 Dyna. Reliable, easy to work on low tech carbed Evo motor, plenty of power for me with just the simple stage 1 upgrade although a little hotter cam has been tempting me lately. I haven't had any trouble finding any kind of parts or accessories for it, and it's an all day comfortable cruiser on the highway or plenty capable of hitting twisties if that's your thing. After trying out 4 or 5 different seats I finally found the right one for me, upgraded the suspension front and rear and I'm pretty confident that there isn't much if anything I could do to make it any more comfortable than it is. If I slap on the windshield it almost feels like cheating the ride is so good.

5 unless the transmission has been swapped out.

Wink Are you lookin' here?

I've had my Superglide since new (Oct. 1994.) 80" EVO is what it has. Stage 1 and replaced the cam @ 24,000 miles with a Crane. The original cam bearing commited suicide as they do. Upgraded cam and bearing pushrods/rockers for the last 100,000+ miles. Change oil/filter every 5 or 6, 000 miles, and keep riding! Don't modify it too much, and just ride it.

The frame design was in 06 along with the six speed and the 49mm front end. The 88 was replaced with the 96 in 2007.
