True that, there was another in '09 for touring and dynas. Less flex.

There was a problem with the cam bearings in the early TC 88's. The rear cam bearing was changed from a ball bearing to a roller bearing, may the previous had this change done when it first came out as a recall/TSB. Still all in all a good and trusted motor.

I think you should pick a price limit then find one you like within the range. They are all so different and customized in different ways. Whatever you buy will need something, cam bearing, lifters maybe a cam if an Evo. On a twin cam Cam chain tensioner maybe cams and tuning if efi along with cosmetic changes. If you're looking for the cheapest route an older Dyna with a carb Evo is going to save you money and be as reliable. Another consideration is who's working on it you or the shop? Not everyone will work on older bikes if you are doing it yourself no worries but your local dealer might not touch it.

Bought this '02 FXD in September '13. Just under 16K miles, pristine condition & essentially bone stock. $6500.

Smooth, comfy, nimble, reliable & about as quick as my inner juvenile delinquent needs.

Bit over $1K & a couple months after bringing 'er home, she looks like this-

Late '01 & '02 TCs have the "best", strongest engines (IMO). Later Evos, '96 up, are damn near bullet proof as well & easier to work on. No shortage of aftermarket goodies & go-faster parts for either.
