I have a 2002 FXD with what I think is factory exhaust. I have added a sidecar for my hound but both her and I find the exhaust TOO FRIGGIN LOUD! I wear ear plugs and she wont ride in it.
I think part of the problem is sound reflecting off the sidecar, particularly from the front pipe.
Is there anything I can do to quieten the existing pipes?
I live on a pension but I would consider replacing the pipes & mufflers if I could find something QUIET! Any suggestions?
My guess is the baffles removed and they are gutted. I've heard of people buying after market quiet baffles or making a packing at home. (I don't know if they make a quiet baffle for a stock muffler though.
I'm sure you'll get lots of good info shortly..
A Supertrapp Supermeg would probably work, get all the exhaust close to the rear of the bike, its a quiet and good performing pipe depending on how many discs you run
there is always people upgrading there pipes i am sure if you look in the classifieds on the forum i am sure you can find a set of stock mufflers there
take a pic from the back of the pipe, up the hole if you will. I wonder if they have been modified or gutted?
Picture attached.
I can put a stick up the centre 18" without hitting anything and there's no sign of a baffle having been removed. Centre opening is 1.315" diameter. Maybe these aren't stock mufflers?
Those are definitely stock mufflers. The baffles haven't been removed, but the central plugs in the baffles have been drilled or knocked out. The fact that the stick went in that far proves that. That makes them pretty loud.

Yeah, I think they are modified. You could try to find another set of stock ones, or get some quieter slip ons.
