Starter clutch went bad on my '99 FXDX. Push the ignition and just get "whirring" sound. Found the All ***** starter clutch w/bearings on amazon for $44.90 shipped. Cheaper than the stealership.
Looking at the parts fiche, trying to confirm if I need to take off the outer primary cover to replace the starter clutch. It's part #37 on the diagram below. Service manual does not provide much direction on removal and assembly.
Any tips/tricks to replacing and can someone confirm the outer primary cover needs to come off. If so, going to order a new outer primary cover gasket with the starter clutch.
Here's the link to the replacement part for reference.
Got to take off the outter primary cover.theres Bolt that gos threw the jackshaft to hold the pinion gear on from the inside no way around.
2006 and newer you dont have too.
When pulling the starter its self, watch what way the spacer gos on the stRter drive.
Primary gaskets, so far ive had mine off about 10 times with out a need to replace them.
Replacing the starter clutc its self not bad. There is 4 or 5 ***** for the starter clutch pinion gear. Watch for those to fall.
