I just changed the starter in my 08 Ultra with an All ***** replacement and the starter will not engage. It spins freely but will not make contact with the flywheel! I did put the ball bearing inside the starter clutch and everything went together fine. any suggestions???
Do you have a rear cyl exhaust bracket? Did you put it on the right (as in right not left) side of the starter housing. Not in between the starte and inner primary. Just throwing this out. Can't imagine anything else causing this outside of the solenoid plunger being broken or the starter not being pulled up tight to the inner.
2.) if you end up pulling the primary cover to "watch what happens"- keep your hands clear.
the starter ( hopefully) turns the clutch basket, turns the chain, turns the motor via the compensator.
It's more than easy to pluck fingers off if the chain pulls them into the sprockets.
In most cases it is imperative to remove the battery cables when opening the primary, as manipulating the starter drive from the primary side can activate the starter motor ( ...and turn the chain and pluck...)
There was an Indy here in town years ago with 3 fingers gone.
I feel sure it's installed correctly. last night I changed it out again with the stock part and it worked. I am having trouble starting when hot with the stock part and the gear on the stock starter clutch is showing wear. The new part does just does not work correctly. I will contact All *****.
That sux that they sent you a defective part and you had to go through all of that not once but twice and are still trying to fix it. You should tell them to check it before they send it out to you, considering.
If you hold the clutch assy with the solenoid end in your left hand, the large gear should rotate counterclockwise freely with your right hand (without turning the clutch hub pinion). It should lock on the shaft (and turn the pinion) if you rotate it clockwise. I suppose AB could have assembled the large gear flipped backwards but I think flipping it back may be difficult to re assemble trying to get all of the rollers to roll back down their ramps under the spring load they have on them. I have talked to the AB guys on the phone and they are pretty good guys. I guess this might prove CHT happens sometimes in the assy world. Just sucks when its you that gets the privilege of proving it.
I think I fiddled with mine enough before putting it back together to have caught a miss assembly but I will put it on the list to check if I have to do it again.
Good Luck with it. Let us know how it turns out.
Can you guys offer advice on why my bike wont start. i was ridign yesterday and it stalled after 20 minutes and it cranks but wont turn over. It is getting gas and has good spark. thoguhts? 09 Road king
Check the inside of the solenoid. The bolt the positive battery cable attaches to has a contact connected to it inside the solenoid. This just happened to me. I must have tightened the battery cable too much and it spun the bolt enough to raise the contact so the plunger could not make contact. I also went over the plunger with some 220 grit sandpaper. I hope this makes sense. John
If you need to align the contacts in the solenoid follow the service manual by pushing in on the plunger while tightening the stud nuts (there is more to this so read the SM). Be sure battery is disconnected as pushing the plunger in will activate the starter motor.
BTW The studs are knurled and should not rotate in the holes. Dis assy and re assy on bench is best.
