Do you have wires and clamps and/or clips to try the starter uninstalled? If the starter drive doesn't move to engage the clutch basket (if it were installed) the way it is installed on the bike isn't the problem. I get the idea this is a complete new starter, it should go back. If the starter drive does move toward the clutch gear, something is wrong with the installation and is binding the in/out movement of the starter drive. BTW, the starter clutch is the little "can" on which the starter gear is mounted. It is a one way drive for the starter gear. When it starts to fail, it makes a chattering/grinding noise which might be confused with the starter gear grinding against the clutch basket gear. Until the starter drive moves to engage the clutch gear, the starter clutch health is an unknown. I put the Allballs starter drive on my factory starter over a year ago and fortunately everything worked on the first try, didn't have to do any of trouble shooting you will have to do. Can't help much with what to re-check.
Can you guys offer advice on why my bike wont start. i was ridign yesterday and it stalled after 20 minutes and it cranks but wont turn over. It is getting gas and has good spark. thoguhts? 09 Road king
Did you stall it with poor clutch use (happens to all of us once in a while) or did it just die? If it just died on its own, whatever caused it to die is probably why it won't re-start. Just hearing the fuel pump run doesn't guaranty the injectors are feeding fuel. How did you verify fuel and spark? Did you check for any codes? Some folks have reported that just disconnecting the fuel line disconnect on the bottom of the tank and reconnecting it gets them running again. Just something to try, no guaranty. Does it start cold, but not hot? That is one of the indications of impending failure of your fuel pump. (Vapor lock from low fuel pressure).
Thanks fo responding. I pulled spark plug and held to motor and it arced across and when I pulled it I could smell gas. Also when I try starting if I actually rpoll the throttle I snmell gas and at full throttle it makes a very small attempt. I will try the fuel line thingy because while doign 50mph it felt like I ran out of gas right before it stalled with a full tank. One thing is I tried my new electirc gloves and right before the bike died I raised the temp to make them hotter. they are wired directly to the battery though. I checked every fuse and they are good.
I'm sure the engine has cooled by now, have you pulled a plug after an unsuccessful start attempt to see if the plug is damp or wet? That would confirm fuel. Did you have to move or disconnect any plugs or wire bundles to install the pig tail? Re-check any connections involved. That it cranks enthusiastically pretty well eliminates loose battery connections, recheck them anyway. Did you check the fuses with an ohm meter? If one has failed where the metal is obscured, it might LOOK ok. Can you or any friends check fuel pump pressure? This may turn out to be unrelated to the heated glove install and just a coincidental failure. Check for codes, if you have any, it might point in a very specific direction.
Yes bike cooled for 24 hours and plug was wet when I pulled. I used triglle charger adapter for the electric gloves. Fuses are good and not blown. Diag is bnot throwing any codes. Thanks
