Hi guys,I own a "06" dyna wide glide with 25,000 miles on it.I would like to increase the displacement to 103.I could purchase a crate engine from harley for around $5000.I'm curious to know if it would fit in the bike and or bolt up to the factory 6 speed transmission.I'm currently running SE exhaust and stage 1 kit.If the 103 is incompatible I may have to bore/stroke and add cams to my current engine.Do you sacrifice drivability when doing this (power curve, idle)? I also am curious about the SE 6 speed transmission in the harley catalogue. Will it fit an "06" dyna? I've had to replace the inner primary bearing with a baker sealed unit due to improper alignment of the tranny case from the factory."07" and later have extra alignment dowels on the inner primary and the tranny case. The 2015 wide glides just don't look as good as mine and they have a decreased lean angle.
Build the motor that's in your bike. For 5k you can have a really bitchin motor vs a stock 103. I'd look at a Baker tranny over the SE if you are really interested in doing something with your transmission.
With $5,000 you can do so much better than a stock HD 103. Find an experienced independent shop, and tuner. Big bore, cams, head work, whatever you want. The concept of "driveability" is an excuse for people who don't want to spend money on making their bikes faster and more powerful. Guys put tens of thousands of miles on bikes every year that have 124" engines putting out 140/140 or better. There is no such thing as poor "driveability" due to engine size/power.
you can have a shop do a 103" conversion kit with new jugs and pistons on your 96" for half that; do the work yourself for way less and put the money into some nice headwork and a lefty bearing...
The displacement kits are the way to go and for the cost of a 103 kit you may as well do a 106/107 kit. Now would be the time to add a cam too as you have some choice in your compression to match it.
