I just installed my SE 255 cams and it took 3 hours for the engine to cool down. Is it normal for the engine to run hotter after installing higher lift cams?
don't know if you do,but do you have a tuner? if so, you need to add fuel across the entire rpm range for correct running temp. cams alone will increase heat..
Those 255's are very hot running EPA compliant style "performance" cams, the CVO 110's came with them and glow exhaust pipes cherry red, especially rear cylinder...and most guys remove them to cool down their bikes by using Fueling 574 cams or others. If you don't have a tuner or at least a 255 download map from HD then you will need such.
In the twin cam upgrade world 255's are not considered an overall great upgrade. But you got them so cool it down with more fuel.
I do have a V&H FP3 and they sent me a flash for them. I did look at the air fuel ratio on the map details and at 100% TPS and 6000 RPM it is at 12. Should it be closer to 8? At idle and normal riding it's at 14.3 for the most part.
I had 255s in my bike for about 10k miles, I loved the torque.
The thing I noticed about the heat wasn't that the engine would get hotter but it would take longer to cool down after coming out of heavey traffic.
My normal running head temp would be 266f while cruising, the highest I've recorded was 360f in stop and traffic with the outside Temps around 100f
Yes cams will increase engine temps. My Address 57H run around 240-260 cruising hwy depending on load and oat. In town 280-320 is seen. Never sat long enough to get over 320.

It's not running hotter while riding, just takes longer to cool off after you shut it down? If so, cool down with the engine off has nothing to do with cams, most likely you paying more attention to the bike and looking for problems. This is a good thing, but sometimes you find things that aren't there.
