I have a 2009 FXD with mid controls. When I bought the bike it had a reduced reach seat that I hated and mad me feel like I was almost sitting on the tank.
I bought a Mustang Wide touring solo seat with back rest as I had the same seat (minus the backrest) on the sportster I sold. The problem I'm having is this seat is killing my lower back. I find that I'm sitting more on the big seat bun part to feel comfortable in the arms and legs but this hurts my back. If I put the back rest in and sit lower in the seat and agents the backrest my doesn't hurt as much but I feel like I'm reaching for the handle bars and I'm not really able to use my hips/legs as much with the mid controls. I'm looking into returning the Mustang seat but my local Mustang dealer I bought the seat from doesn't know what his distributor's policy is on returns so I could be stuck trying to sell it.
I'm 6' 2" 280 and I'm looking for some suggestions on a good seat that will keep my back from hurting and give me a upright (more "standard" type riding position ) than a laid back touring style. This bike is my more around town with the wife/solo and maybe an occasional hour plus solo ride. I have a bagger for any real long trips.
Thanks for you help I'm really getting frustrated (and poorer) with this seat search.

As far as I know stock for a 09 FXD. But where my arms end up feeling right while in the backrest they would have to come back another 2" so even if I adjusted the bar it wouldn't be enough. I started to look at changing the riser/bars but thats going to be like $200 and it wouldn't help the problem of it taking away some of the bellow the waist turning I want to have with this bike.
I had a similar issue with my 04, when I finally found a comfortable spot in the stock seat I was really reaching and leaning forward for my bars. I bought a 3.5 riser with 1.5 pull back and they fell real good now, like to change the bars for aesthetic reasons but not now.
I wish I had a stock seat for a reference point. Since the bike came with a reduced reach when I bought it (bought it from a local shop that didn't get the stock seat) I really have no point of reference other than that and the now the Mustang seat. Fingers crossed that I can exchange the seat for another mustang one but after going to Mustang's site and seeing that they have stopped their 30 day return policy I have a feeling I'm going to be stuck buying another seat and trying to sell my wide touring. I think part of my problem is the backrest mount that is molded into the seat. Since that area is molded into the fiberglass structure I can't really crush it down when sitting back further so thats jamming into my back.
Is there a local Harley Dealer/shop?
Our local shop has "demo" seats for folks to try,, they have "DEMO" embossed all over the fabric so nobody rides off with a new seat,, give'm your drivers license/info and try a seat out for a few miles.
This is the Mustang Regal Duke on my 09 FXD, and fit's in almost the exact position as the factory original,, yet the square back give's me a little more low back/tail bone support. It give me something for my butt to be against,, I like it but I'm 5'7".
I have one a few miles away. I had always had good luck with Mustang and even had the same seat (without the backrest) on my sportster and liked it hence why I just bought one for the Dyna. If I can't get an exchange it wouldn't be a bad idea to go and try some Harley seats.
The whole thing would change if you put forwards on the dyna,, those are kuryakyn 9063's on mine. Even at my size the mids had me cramping my knees
To be honest in the back of my mind I keep thinking that but I like the mids for the type of riding I will be doing on this bike. Plus I went out and looked for a bike with mids and probably could have found one cheaper with forwards lol.
So I got my new wide tripper in and its worse than the wide touring. the seat frame is driving into my lower back. I went for a 20 min ride and kept moving around trying to get my back form hurting and never did. Got home and sat down for a few min and when I got up I couldn't walk right. Is a Dyna just not a bike for me or is there something I'm missing here? I didn't have this problem with the Sportster and I don't have any probs with my Electra Glide
