Exclamation SoCal Riders HELP!

If any SoCal Riders would happen to have a cam bearing puller/installer tool and are willing to loan to me I am in dire need!

I was putting my cams in today at the hobby shop on base, everything was going great till I try to put in the new bearings. As I was wrenching the tool in to seat the bearings the end of the collet spread apart (basically broke). Got the first bearing half way seated and I am stuck there.

I tried bending the collet back to the its original shape in a vice and go at it again but had the same result. Not sure why this happened in the first place, I am using the Heartland tool that everyone seems to have success with, but I guess I just wasnt lucky today.

Anyway, if any SoCal riders could help me out, I would greatly appreciate your grace. If I can get the tool I am heading back to the hobby shop tomorrow (Sunday) to finish the job.

If anyone knows where I could buy a tool in SoCal that would be just as helpful. I already called two HD dealerships around and they dont have it. Not sure where else to check.

Thanks again,

Eric

Correct me if I am confused reading your post but the tool to "press" in new bearings is solid, not the collet that spreads. The collet is used to extract the bearings by spreading inside the bearing and then you pull them out.

Did I just misread your post?

My Heartland product has a driver that goes on the end of the collet to drive the bearing in. Without the driver its a puller, with the driver its an installer. Followed the directions exactly that I got from Heartland, not sure why it went wrong.

Not sure how to upload the insturctions pdf from Heartland but here is a cut and paste of the install directions below:

Installing New Bearings
1) If continuing from step 6 of Pulling Old Bearings Out instructions, remove the “T” PIN (Fig. 6), install DRIVER into COLLET (Fig. 7/8), and place new bearing with rounded side facing outwards on the DRIVER (Fig. 9). Apply a small amount of pressing lubricant to the outside diameter of the new bearing.
2) Thread COLLET out of the INSTALLATION PLATE until about 2 ž” of collet is left on outside part of plate. (Fig. 10)
3) Position the INSTALLATION PLATE with COLLET, DRIVER, and new bearing on the bore opening. Use the four (4) thumb SCREWS to secure the tool in place. (Fig. 11)
4) Carefully turn COLLET inward until the new bearing aligns in the bore.
5) Tighten the COLLET until the DRIVER touches the engine case. New bearing is now correctly installed below the case surface. (Fig. 12)
6) Once the new bearing is installed, repeat Installing New Bearings steps 2-5 or disassemble the set and repeat Pulling the Bearing Out process.

So just racking my brain here for ideas....I remember reading about Harbor Frieght having a tool that people used, anyone have any comments or suggestions on it? Also, the on-site mechanic said for that the bearing I already have some-what seated I "may" be able to use a socket and tap it the rest of the way home, but he didnt recommend that for trying to seat a new one from scratch; any thoughts on that?

Lastly, Auto Zone, I know they loan out tools, anyone ever try them?

Thanks for any help I can get guys.

Eric

I say do not use a socket, better to reuse the old cam if need be.

The socket will just smack on the outside rim of the bearing (may damage the edge) whereas at least the cam would be inside the bearing helping it keep it's form/shape and I think just better to use then the socket.

I've used the old cams to install bearings. Always worked out well for me.
