Default Thinking Of Changing Rides

Right now I have a '02 Road King that I traded my '03 XLH883 in for eight years ago because at the time we liked going for short country rides together and found the Sportster was a bit too small for comfort. We are now in our early 60's and my wife doesn't really care to ride much anymore and also that I am finding the mass of the RK to be more of an effort to muscle around safely.

What I am considering is selling it and going to a Dyna which I figure should be more user friendly for me to handle. There is a 2005 Dyna Super Glide with 28000kms (my RK has 24000kms) for sale locally asking $8900 which I sat on in his driveway and it seems less heavy and awkward, I can put both feet flat on the ground but it feels a bit high and at 5'7" I'm short anyway.

Taking into consideration the fact that my wife may still at some point want to go for the rare occasional ride (2-up 300 pounds ttl), can only lower rear shocks be put a Super Glide to bring down the seat height a bit without affecting the handling or would I be better off looking for a used FXDL instead? Thanks.

You can change there rear shocks with minimal impact on the handling, as long as you don't go overboard. If I remember correctly there's only 1/2" difference in the Super Glide and the Low Rider shocks.

Hey 'Reindeer' and thanks for the response. I had no idea there is only a 1/2" difference in length between the Dyna Low and FXD stock shocks. That being the case, if I do decide to go for the '05 Super Glide there would be no point in changing shock lengths as I don't want to go too low on the rear suspension and for the sake's of half an inch it wouldn't be worth the bother. Thanks again.

According to this spec sheet, the Low Rider has a 1.3" lower seat height. I think its part in the shocks and part different seat.

Would the Super Glide 'Custom' seat height necessarily be lower than the base Super Glide or does the Custom have other noteworthy accessories?

I guess I probably don't want to put out $$ to lower the seat height an inch or so if the difference would be, for the most part, negligable.

As far as I know, the seat height should be about the same on the base and the Custom. The Custom does have a different (2 up as opposed to 1 up) seat, but the basic bike is the same. Not sure on '05s in particular, but the Custom is basically a bigger tank with the gauge on the tank instead of the handlebar, spoked wheels, and more chrome.

8,900 for an '05 SuperGlide is ridiculously high. I think you need to keep looking.

You're right, he's priced it above market value which here should be around $7900 in excellent condition according to the Canadian Blue Book. Even though it comes safetied and with things like saddlebags, windshield, SE mufflers and a couple other accessories I know he is asking too much but I'm not in a panic, I still have the RK and if need be will keep it till next year then resume a search for a gently used '00-'05 Dyna Glide, preferably a LowRider but an SG would be fine also.

Having both RK and an SG in my garage for many years, here's what I noticed about them~

The RK feels like you are sitting on the motorcycle.
The SG fells like you are sitting in the motorcycle.
The RK is a wonderful touring platform, but unwieldy and cantankerous around town.
The Dyna isn't as good at touring, but really shines in a "point-n-shoot" around town environment.

Both bikes are superb, in their respective categories.

If you are doing only short hops, then the Dyna is hard to beat (especially solo.)

Good luck in your choice.

I miss my Roadking. I picked up a 08 super glide yesterday for 5900 from dealer 96ci 6 speed same as my old king and 44000 miles. Think their asking a bit much. I rode with the wife today I'm over 280lbs just have to tweak the controls a bit. Very happy.
