So, I'm bored at work and an idea came to me...want to see what you guys all think... and if its even doable.
I have an 09 fatbob and it has the stock gas cap/gauge. I don't mind the look of them, but I'd like to slap a #1 cap on them - problem is, they only are made of the gas cap, not the fuel gauge. Could I potentially get 2 of the caps, slap the one of the regular cap, but maybe water jet out an opening that would match the gauge window? This way, both caps would be symetrical and I'd still retain my fuel gauge. This is assuming the fuel gauge is the same size and curvature as the fuel cap itself...
I could also potentially throw two caps on without cutting a window and just get an aftermarket speedo that has a fuel gauge in it, but I like the stock one.
That's a good idea. If it was me, I wouldn't bother with cutting out a window so you can see the inaccurate fuel gauge. Those things aren't worth the effort to look at them. Just keep the stock speedo and use one of the trip meters to keep track of your last fill up.
I thought of that. Everyone seems to bash the heck outta the gauge. Mine seems to be ok... I never really push the limits though on the E side... I feel so helpless without a "reserve" like my old carb'd trusty rides had
BTW, Nevil, did you lower your front end of your street bob? Looks lower than my wife's '15.

I know what you mean, I actually miss the reserve, but don't miss the petcock.
My low fuel light comes on when I still have about 2 gallons left so it's pretty useless.
I don't see why you couldn't cut out a window. Unless the material, size, or shape it is made out of is not suitable for such things. I've seen some in J & P and other places that have a gauge version. Pretty much the same thing as you are suggesting. I'm not sure on a FB but on my SB they are the same shape.
I was always kinda fond of the gauge. It wasn't too far off but it seems that is not usual. Now I have a Tach/Speedo and it has a fuel gauge on it also. Been tossing around the idea of a cap cover now.
Good idea! If your gauge isnt accurate it can be made more accurate. I use the fuel gauge in my speedo and prayed Plasti Dip over my fuel gauge and filler cap.
Yeah, a combo speedo would be great, but I just don't have the disposable coin to drop that much currently . And I do like the look of the stock speedo.
I didn't see any covers for gauges at JP... Maybe I'm looking in the wrong section.
If I did try this, the only think I'd be worried about is the cuts looking ragged or screwing up the finish on the cap, esp the black #1 I want - I could see the paint flaking or if its made of steel it might rust.

aint that the truth, after 80-100mi my gauge is pretty well pegged on E, then the low fuel light comes on at around 135mi around town and I've still got an entire gallon of fuel left.
I've ran down my fuel range to where it just says "LO RNG" a few times and still have never put more than 4 gallons in my 4.7 gallon tank. Oh well its a "reserve" I guess.
On a side note I'd just leave the caps as is. I have not desire to have them match to a T.

Not the ones that I liked but page 362 is where I find some. Where the gas caps are. I'm not sure where I found the ones I did like better.
